Placing LCR speakers with horn tweeters behind accoustically transparent screen

Hello Everyone,

I would appreciate having others weigh in on this question. I have spoken to experts in person who are telling me two different things:
I am placing a 180” wide acoustically transparent fixed screen in front of three large LCRs that have horn tweeters (Triad Platinum speakers). I have been told by one expert that the speakers need to sit 8-12” behind the acoustically transparent screen. That is what I thought as well. However, another expert has told me since these speakers have horn tweeters that only an inch or so separation is all I need.

I am hoping to avoid having to recess the back wall with the LCR be recessed since this will require extensive framing, and also a recessed niche behind the screen will create side walls that may reflect sound from the sides, forcing me to place the L & R speaker away from the sides and pushing them together toward the center. I would like to keep the L & R as far apart as possible given the large size of the room (35’ x 21’). The bass will go to dedicated subs sitting under the screen so we would be dealing with 85 to 22K range being produced by the LCRs.

Can some of you weigh in on this for me? How much separation given this type of speaker? Thanks.

You should ask in the Triad thread.

With AT screens placement of the speakers 8-12" behind the screen will be beneficial for acoustics. However, it partly depends on the screen you are using. A perforated type AT screen you would definitely want to place it 8-12" behind the screen. If you are using a woven type AT screen you can place it closer. Although you will still get some benefit from 8-12" behind it, it is nowhere as detrimental acoustically as when you do this with a perforated screen. So this issues is really more screen dependent than whether it uses a horn or not.

You don't want to separate them too much. Putting speakers in corners is not a good idea. Are you planning on acoustic treatments? This can be a loaded question. AVS has a good design service which will help you make good decisions on placements of speakers, subs and treatments. You have some nice equipment and it would be a waste to not get it set up properly. Let somebody with the experience and knowledge model your room. The service is pretty inexpensive I think (~$600). I know many companies charge a lot more. Another option is look for an HAA calibrator in your area.
