I understand I'm giving up more than 1/2 the power into 8-ohms instead of supplied 3-ohm speakers. My concern is manuals such as for the entry-level Panasonic SC-XH1x0 warn you MUST use the supplied speakers. They mention Error Codes that suggest the receiver can detect incorrect speaker cabling. Do these HTIB's (1) actually detect incorrect speaker impedance and disable, and (2) do they allow only attaching 2 speakers instead of the supplied 5 or more?
I understand some HTIBs allow setting audio to stereo mode but it's not clear if you still need the other speakers attached; that is, my inkjet printer requires all ink cartridges to be present with ink to print anything even if a specific color is not needed.
I'm perfectly happy with basic stereo and don't need much power (<50W). That is, today I run the L/R stereo audio RCA-jack outputs from my DVD player into a stereo receiver and speakers. I'm considering a HTIB receiver because it has remote control and only 2-3" tall vs. the 5" tall component receivers put out by most major manufacturers.
