I have a GoldenEar TritonCinema surround sound system which consists of the Triton Three towers, Supersat 50C center, and Supersat 3 surrounds driven by a Pioneer Elite VSX-40 receiver rated at 80 wpc. I do not have a separate subwoofer, and configured the towers as LARGE, surrounds and center as SMALL, and subwoofer NO. This redirects the LFE to the large speakers per the manual. Crossover is configured to 100Hz (default). I do not have separate LFE cables running to the towers. I have the subwoofer level knob at the 2 o'clock position on the towers.
The problem I hear is in one of the towers when playing deep bass effects there is a squeaking sound almost like a cricket chirping sound coming from either the tweeter or the mid driver. I noticed it when watching Iron Man 2 on DVD in the scene where Mickey Rourke slashes the race cars on the Monaco race track... I do not need the volume very loud to hear it, its actually easier to hear the squeaking at lower volume.
I already swapped the towers to verify it is the speaker itself. I haven't ever played the system loud to the point where it would clip or sound distorted. However I know my receiver is on the low end. I'm wondering could it have caused damage to the speaker if it is underpowered?
Any thoughts on what it might be? Any help is appreciated! Thanks.
