GoldenEar Triton Three problem

I have a GoldenEar TritonCinema surround sound system which consists of the Triton Three towers, Supersat 50C center, and Supersat 3 surrounds driven by a Pioneer Elite VSX-40 receiver rated at 80 wpc. I do not have a separate subwoofer, and configured the towers as LARGE, surrounds and center as SMALL, and subwoofer NO. This redirects the LFE to the large speakers per the manual. Crossover is configured to 100Hz (default). I do not have separate LFE cables running to the towers. I have the subwoofer level knob at the 2 o'clock position on the towers.

The problem I hear is in one of the towers when playing deep bass effects there is a squeaking sound almost like a cricket chirping sound coming from either the tweeter or the mid driver. I noticed it when watching Iron Man 2 on DVD in the scene where Mickey Rourke slashes the race cars on the Monaco race track... I do not need the volume very loud to hear it, its actually easier to hear the squeaking at lower volume.

I already swapped the towers to verify it is the speaker itself. I haven't ever played the system loud to the point where it would clip or sound distorted. However I know my receiver is on the low end. I'm wondering could it have caused damage to the speaker if it is underpowered?

Any thoughts on what it might be? Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

Hi fellow South sider. I doubt that you damaged it by underpowering if in fact you did not play at loud levels, that does not mean it can't happen if pushed with not enough power or clean power. I would contact Goldenear, they have very good customer service. Did you buy them at The Little Guy's?? I have the Triton Two's just for 2 channel and use a preamp and amp to power them. Also while on the phone with Goldenear ask them about using the LFE, another friend of mine had better results using that for Home Theater. Good luck.

Hey Bluvette, yes I did buy my system from them. I brought the speaker in for repair, and they were trying to blame it on my receiver (I did not buy the receiver from them nor do they sell Pioneer). My thought is the speaker has been "defective" from day one and I have not noticed it until now. It has to be punchy low frequency bass to actually hear the squeak. Other than that, the speaker sounds great with no distortions or bad noises at other frequencies or volume levels.

PS Your theater looks pretty awesome!

Try running a separate LFE cable and see if that makes a difference.

I did not try that. Presently the speaker is in the shop.

Thanks bozobuttz, keep us posted. I would try the LFE when you get them back even if they repair them.

I got the speaker back from repair last Friday. They had to replace the 5x9" Quadratic Sub-Bass Driver. Problem solved and knock on wood I don't have any more issues with it!
