I live in the US and I don't know what's in the update

I'm a happy owner of a new LG 55LM9600 I read all of the bad reviews but decided to get one anyway. I got the Amazon price at BB with price match (~$2K). That made it basically the same price as the Sony 850 and just a bit more than the Panny WT50. All of these sets looked great but the LG stands out in the design department which was important to me. See photo below to see how it looks. I was limited in how large a set could fit in my cabinet. The Sony 850 would have just barely fit, but it just didn't look as good (imho). The larger Sony 950 was just too tall. The LG was just right

So far, things look great. I'm playing with settings to find the right combination for my environment and viewing (which is mostly DirecTV HD sports, news, etc.). I don't plan on much blu-ray, widescreen viewing (have a dedicated theater for that), so not too concerned about the flashing that others have noticed. I did see it during the initial setup (in the lower right corner), but not at all during normal viewing.

The only surprise so far is that the screen is even more reflective than the Samsung plasma that I am replacing. Oh well, I'm pretty used to the reflections and can control it reasonably well if I'm not too lazy to get up and close the blinds.

Not a big fan of the remote, but I have a Harmony, so its no big deal.

I'm curious to hear what settings you use for sports (football, tennis, etc.)? I've tried several of the combinations mentioned in this thread, and am not satisfied. These seem to look good for movies, but are a bit too dark / warm for sports. Is anyone else using color temp of Medium instead of Warm for sports? Turning up the backlight a bit (to around 55) and setting the color temp to medium seem to work well for me.

Well I just updated the firmware from 04.20.18 to 04.31.30 and lost the option to adjust 'local dimming' on any picture mode. Had it before but not now. It's there in the settings but greyed out permanently and set on low. Don't know of any other change and can't find any info on what was upgraded. If you use 'local dimming' on any setting other than low-don't update the firmware.

I have 04.31.30 and can change local dimming on all modes (except THX)...

How did you get the update, 04.31.30 to work. Mine gets to 4% and just stops. I let it run fro 4 hours and then gave up.

I got a message saying the update was available for download and selected ok. It took about 15 minutes to download and then the set did a reboot to load the new version. This all happened right after turned the set on for the first time.

TV Reviews - all depends on your perspective.

Well, I had the LM9600 for a couple of days and have a pretty good feel for how it performs. As I said in an earlier post, I was aware of the less than stellar reviews this set has received (Home Theater Magazine, CNet, etc.) but I bought it anyway. The design is terrific and it fit my space better than the alternatives.

While I would never try to dispute a professional reviewer, I have a different perspective - will it be a noticeable improvement over what I have today and does it do what I am looking for. In both cases, the answer for the LM9600 is yes.

I replaced a two year old Samsung plasma (D7000 series, 51") with the LM9600. I moved the Samsung into another room, so I am able to compare the two sets using the same source material. Note that the D7000 was a top rated plasma in 2010 and received great reviews from many of the same publications that panned the LG. I've compared the two using blu-ray and a variety of DirecTV HD programming. The black level and shadow detail is every bit a good on the LG as on the plasma. One thing you rarely hear about in plasma reviews is white levels. On bright or white scenes, the LG is much better. The plasma produces much dimmer gray looking whites. You don't really notice this unless you are looking at the them side by side, but the difference is significant. Also, the LG picture seems to have more depth (and I'm not talking about 3D mode). Overall, I prefer the LG to the plasma.

In the CNet review of the LG, the reviewer mentioned a scene from Star Trek where the enemy ship first comes into view. He said that the LG looked "indistinct and murky". I checked out this scene and found that the ship was very distinct and not murky at all. Maybe I got a better sample than he did? For comparison sake, I watched the same scene on my plasma and saw about the same result. Just to be sure, I watched it in my theater room on my JVC X3 projector. The X3 is highly rated and has excellent black level and shadow detail. I saw exactly the same thing on the X3 that I did on the LG. All in all, I'd say that the performance of the LG is pretty impressive.

And as interesting as these comparisons are, the real reason I bought the LG was for viewing sports and other DirecTV programming in our living room which has lots of light. In this setting, it really shines (no pun intended). The brightness, clarity of whites, and detail are a definite step up from my plasma.

As I said, it just a matter of your perspective.

I didn't even know the 9600 came in a 47" model. There's nothing on the LG website saying anything about the 9600 being a discontinued item. If it was, I would think it's because now it's the end of the year and something new for 2013 is on the way. I also find it a little hard to believe that LG would cut back on support & updates even if the TV was discontinued. I sometimes wonder where these sales reps get their information from, or if they make up stories as they go along, much like car salesmen..................

Oops...I didn't have any input in use when I checked all the picture modes. The only thing that changed in regards to the local dimming option is that there is no 'off' option anymore. And it is changeable in THX mode if you have the standard remote and use the '8741' code.

yeah, its always hard with these guys to tell whether they are just feeding you crap to get a sale or what....for all i know it could just be the guy trying to sell more 8600/7600 cause they are over stocked on them so he feeds me the line on the the 9600 cause they are on sale...who knows......when i inquired further he went on to say that they are being discontinued because they are to expensive to build?

I'm new to this forum and I just purchased the 47LM9600 at the future shop for $1235.00. I got them price check it with Canada Computers, they have it on sale for $1250.00 and the sale ends today. Future Shop has around 30 units left at the Caledon, Ontario warehouse.
Great TV but mine has considerable backlight (flashlight) bleeding, 6 areas at the bottom and 2 areas at the top. The 2 areas at the lower right are very bad, the lower left is not so bad but all can be seen with dark movies scenes. I tried several settings from other owners in this forum but its there even with the backlight off, not as bad but there. I even tried losening and tightening the screws, no luck. I may have to return it for another. I may sound contradicting saying its a great TV with this problem but everything else works well besides the screen bleed through.

exchange it until you get a good one, its the only way to fix the problem....or you may wanna consider the lm7600 at the same price

See if you can find a 'September' built tv. They seem to have the least amount of flash-lighting. The latest firmware 04.31.30 seems to have lessen the effect as well on my 55LM9600. When I first got my tv I could hardly see any, but after a few break-in hours you could see the four corners with the flashlight bleed. The new firmware softens the effect. Still it's not that bad-just noticeable because I look for it and I know it's there. Other than that, it's an awesome tv (at a sale price). Oh and if you play video games use the RBG-PC setting to get rid of the lag.

This one was made in July (207) and the flashlight bleed is not just in the corners, it has 6 separate areas all along the bottom, 2 top corner bleeds I would consider normal. The 04.31.30 did not help at all even when the backlight is set to "0". The pictures that I has seen from other posts, this one is severe.I'll try to post a pic, its more domiant with viewing in a dark room. I would understand if it just emitted from the corners blooming towards the center but this one directs light straight up from the bottom ,very strong from 4 of the 6 bleeding areas.

Here's a couple of pics but I'm not sure how well they will show the effect or maybe I'm expecting too much. Let me know what you think.

That's what I thought. My old 46XBR8 has some at the very corners but very good compared to this. The backlight 53 Brightness 59 for the test screen.

I too looking into price-matching Future Shop (FS) with Canada Computers, the weird thing is that the 55LM9600 doesn't have any discount as near as the 47" model is, still selling for ~$2800! If they are going to discontinue this model, why the 55" price isn't heavily discounted yet?
I put order for samsung 55ES7100 from NCIX during the pre-boxing day sale and they totally botched it so I cancelled it.
Now I am looking for another TV, seeing the price for 47LM9600 really gained my interest. The exceptional praise given for its color reproduction, 3D capability, and IPS panel increased my interest even more.
But after seeing all of the complaints of light bleeding around the edges seen by the buyers lately...I have great concern now. I will stop by at FS and see if they've in stock the september or later built date. Thanks for those who took their time tp post their experiences with the TV.

I know what you mean the 55LM9600 would of been a great score if it were marked down like the 47LM9600. The "55" would be my first choice then the 46XBR8 would be relocated to the bedroom.By the way, I was wrong about the Canada Computers sale ending on Jan 3/13, its on sale until Jan 31/13 and not all stores are carrying stock..
I exchanged the 47LM9600 at the Future Shop today and guess what, I received one with the same date code(207) and it almost has the same backlight bleeding. I am trying to distinguish if its better or worse. I honestly love the TV operationally(Picture and Performance) but the bleeding bugs the hell out of me. I asked the guy at the Future shop warehouse if he could check a couple of the serial numbers off the cartons but he said that they can not do that but what he did tell me" that both skids of the 47LM9600 arrived at the same time(didn't say when)..... maybe BS to get me off his back. There are now 24 left but I am wondering about the date codes that Canada Computers have in stock or if the date code makes a difference(could be hit and miss). They may all have the same IPS panel with the same manufacturing/assembly technics so all 47LM9600's are suspect..I will call Canada Computers and get them to check the date code tomorrow or maybe I will just give up and get a refund.
This TV was priced around the $3000 mark so getting it for almost 60% off is not so bad especially if you get a good one.

if you need the dual core processor and extra features but dont want the edge bleed, then consider the lm8600....otherwise if you can live without the dual core and want something for the same price as your lm9600 but without the edge bleed, go for the lm7600.

I came back from canada computers in Mississauga, all of their 47LM9600 have serial #s that start with 208 - which according to one of the poster that means they are august built-date. Going to check the stocks at the Brampton & N. York branches soon.
So I remember, that I read it somewhere in this thread, most users with september built-date have the least risk of experiencing light bleed. But some of the early adopters that started this thread was able to remove the imperfection by using flatpaneHD's settings.
Unfortunately, CC charges 5% for returning open-box item - need to confirm with CC if you're experiencing the light-bleed issue that it would constitute as defective. If they would accept light-bleed as defective, I would take a risk and jump with august built-date if the other two stores have older built-date.
There's no way you can get the same TV from other MFGs with the same set of features with this price. This model is probably gonna be discontinued (new models are coming) soon, hence the huge discount. I'm not able to find the LM9600 model at visions.ca, audio video 2001, bestbuy canada, NCIX.

Hi,

I had two 55LM8600s (2nd one had a Sept build date) that had light bleeding that showed up during night time scenes and during letter box type movies. I returned them and just received a 55LM9600 with an Oct build date.

The new 9600 has very minimal, if no, light bleed during normal viewing of night scenes and letter box movies. It does have some light bleed during some power up and down screens, but not during normal veiwing.

A couple of comments:

I feel the 9600 has better overall picture quality over the 8600 (I have not performed the WOW calibration yet)
The 9600 has a slighlty smaller bezel than the 8600 making the 9600 width slightly smaller
The 9600 sound is better than the 8600 - It has an additional rear facing speaker
I think the 8600 has a better look/design than the 9600. The 9600 has a very small metal band around the edge where the 8600 is almost all glass from edge to edge
Both TV's gave me "Out Of Memory" errors when I surfed the net and had PIP (any help?)


In summary, I am very happy with the 9600 due to the fact that I no longer have a light bleeding issue. If I had an 8600 without light bleeding I would have been very happy, but that didn't happen.


I hope this helps others thinking about these two TVs.

I think that a few posts said that it was reduced to an acceptable level or greatly reduced. When it was first released before the update fix it could of been worse but I need more pics in order to judge. In some of the 7600 and 8600 feedbacks there was some complaints of backlight bleeding but not to the extent of the 9600. Then again I have seen feedbacks of backlight bleeding on higher end Sony and Samsung as well. If you decide to get one tailoe13 please post a couple of pics with a black screen if you have any or no issues. Like you said this TV is loaded with great features and the dual core does work very well. For the price I don't think you can go wrong even with some backlight bleeding. When the new models are released after CES the deals may even be better but they will be few and far between.

My reboots and Netflix issues seem to be gone at this point. Keeping my fingers crossed. If it wasn't for the recent firmware upgrade, I really think the issue was with my old dLink router. Replaced it with Netgear. Coincided with the new firmware, so LG could have done something. SJ

No, they are not DRV Ready like the set you linked to.
