Definitive Technology BP6B Vs BP8020ST?

I am a total newbie (New as Newbies can be), and am building my first home theater system. Most of what we listen to is regular TV (sitcoms and news).

I went to Best Buy recently and loved a 3 channel setup with two Definitive Technology BP8020 ST and CS8040 for center. The two 8020s had enough base for me to skip a sub for now. I also got to audition the 8040, 8060 and 8080 floor-standings and thought the 8020 were adequate for us. Backwards as I work, I have bought a Pioneer 1121K and the center Def Tech CS8040 already. I don't really have a budget, but don't wanna overspend. On the verge of buying the 8020 towers, I came across great deals on Def Tech's BP6 and BP8 (the former is a better deal). I have never auditioned either of these.

If I wanted to get the BP6, which ones in this series is it closest to (considering that I had felt 8020 would be perfect)?

On a completely unrelated subject, what wire should I get- Monoprice 12AWG or step it up to Monster? The rear speaker would be about 25'-30' from the receiver. Other brands?

Another option would be the sm45 and a nice sub. They sound nice! Otherwise i'd get the 8020.

I don't think I have heard the SM45. As a bookshelf, it seems much smaller than the BP6. Do you know how bp6, bp8 and 8020 compare in performance?

Hi Gurdesh, the BP 6 is a fine speaker, but both the BP6B and BP8B are passive speakers. The 8020 is a much newer model, with our current dual surround driver technology. It also has powered subs, vs no powered subs in the 6 and 8. It has our current take on bipolar, with the rear array firing at 6 dB down for better imaging. Admittedly it is a costlier product, but it's a far more advanced one too. I hope this helps - Best regards, Joe

I agree that the 8020 is a better speaker (and that's what I auditioned with my center- CS8040). I guess going by my overall budget, I am lost about whether I should spend $800 in getting two 8020s, or $400 in two BP6; and spend the remaining $400 on better rears/ sub?

The two decision points for me would be:
1. In terms of bass response, I feel that the 8020s could take care of the base by themselves (for my requirements). Would the BP6 come close? i.e., can I get away with two BP6s without a sub?

2. In terms of balancing the HT system, it seems like I jumped the gun and got a very good center- I want my news anchors to sound awesome ;-). Would the BP6 be too little for the center in terms of overall sound balance? Can a center ever overshadow the fronts; or is it always the other way round.

I'd get the BP802, over the older line. I've heard the BP10, and while nice, you'll want something that matches the center the best, which would be the BP8020. If you like to rock out and play it LOUD, you may need something bigger then the BP8020 depending on your room size.

I'd personally rather try something like the CS8040, SM45's, and a SuperCube 6000. eek.gifsmile.gif

Hi Gurdesh -

I can tell you this much, the Bp6b is a nice tower (which I did own), but they are in no way those could keep up with the 8020's which also has the powered subs biggrin.gif .

Keep in mind if you liked the way they sounded in the Magnolia Store in Best Buy, wait until you get them into your house and set the towers up the "LARGE" settings through your audio receiver!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At the Best Buy store I can for sure tell you that all speaker settings on the AV receiver are set to SMALL. This really caps out the 8040s to its full potential (with subs) and to me all the towers sounds like ***!!!! but if you set them to SMALL make sure you are running a sub / lfe.

If you can , for sure go with the 8020's!

You just want to take all my money mad.gif.

Okay, will get the 8020s. Whats a good price? All I'm getting is $400 each at amazon etc. Do they ever go on sale? I can wait, especially since I have to tell my kids that they would have to go without food for a year when I get these speakers.

Local/online the most you'll probably see is 15% off. If you don't mind used, check ebay, audiogon, etc. You'll probably save 20-50% used. Just make sure it's in warranty still incase you have any issues. Yep, this is a expensive addiction, good luck! Report back when you get something!

I was kidding when I wrote the money bit, Sincere apologies if you felt bad. I just hate the thought of my money leaving my warm little bank account tongue.gif. Dont know where I saw the 800 a pair price for 8020, I only see $900+ for the pair now. Will probably wait a few weeks and pick the lowest price.
