Carpet Tile

I've just installed new hardwood throughout my house. But I want to get the best sound out of my living room/media room. I know I can't just leave the bare wood. But my wife won't let me just carpet the whole damn room. I've thought about putting down a wool rug, but I like the way some of the carpet tiles looks at http://www.focusfloors.com and the prices are much better than wool.

My question: Will I get good sound absorption with carpet tile? Or will I get better sound absorption with a wool rug? Carpet tile cost about $150 Rug cost about $600.

Thanks for your input.

The more dense the area rug the better. But it will never absorb sound as well as a thick pad and carpet. The area rug I use is a 2.5 m diameter. Looks like a 1/2" dia. rope coiled up, its quite dense.
I did not see any thickness of those carpet tiles, only that they have a foam back. I doubt they would be as dense.

In my florida home my living room had tile throughout. I had carpet cut to size and added a pad underneath. Made it look like a huge area rug. Cheap too.

That's an idea...having a custom rug cut.

I've been digging around at the carpet tiles. It looks like they are more dense than standard carpet. But I'm really curious about the wool rug. Or at least the cost/benefit ratio.

But are those carpet tiles as dense as a rug and pad combined? Probably not. And of coarse, there are many different types of area rugs. The one that is the heaviest would be the most dense.

I believe I have decided to go with the carpet tiles. The cost/benefit ratio is too good and I can mix and match them to suite my room.

I got the carpet tile installed. I'm really happy with the result. Sounds great.
