Just received my 5010 via fedEx delivery yesterday afternoon. Unfortunately, I had committments last night and have just now unboxed and begun setting things up. Can't wait to complete the setup and watch a movie or two in 11.1 tonight. I have every expectation that this unit will provide me with superb video processing, sound and performance (thanks Joerod for all of your help). However, a couple of things struck me first though. First of all, come on Onkyo, I've purchased a receiver with a $3000.00 list price, and I dont get batteries for the remote or even a MANUAL? Sure I can print one out online, but given the bad timing of my elderly laser printer dying on me Thursday night, this is hardly convenient. I've never failed to receive a manual for any piece of audio or video gear, ever, in all these years.
Secondly, and more importantly, the remote appears to be absolutely pathetic for a unit of this quality. Its small, light, cheap, and just plain inadequate. Apparently Onkyo's strategy is that I should expect to just calmly drop a couple hundered on a Harmony universal remote when buying their top of the line receiver? I'm wondering if the remote from my SC886 Onkyo Pre pro will work with the 5010. At least it is solid, well made and entirely usable. Barring that, I realize there is the Apple/Android app. Is this capable of replacing a complete remote control? The reviews of it are not great, and some of the other commentary makes it seems as though it may be more oriented for streaming music to the receiver from ones network. Am I wrong, and will this allow me use it as a completley functional remote? If not, there appear to be other remote apps for Onkyo's, are any of them better?
There is also this remote app from OnkoTron:
