I have no idea at all why it is not seeing the "wides" and even less with the issue concerning the left side (or "surround" in 5.1) speaker. Those two speakers are still connected as they have been for years, to my 5 channel Sunfire amp. And they work perfectly after simply switching them over to my old 886 pre-pro.
I think, at least some of the problem has to be the pre-out connections, but I have no specific information about those. I've connected them in the manner that I think is corrrect, and logical, but there is no information at all from Onkyo to verify that. My "quick start" documentation says to look at the provided manual for the information regarding those connections, and even a kind forum member who checked his 10 series cd of the manual says that it literally says the same thing "refer to the manual".
I have the side speakers connected to the "surround' pre out connections, but now I am wondering if that is right. I finally had to give up my troubleshooting when my fiance indicated that it was 8:30 at night, and we had things to watch, which were were GOING to watch. So I quickly re-connected everything back to the 886 to allow for that. I am more than a little frustrated right now. I couldnt have imagined this would drag out this long. Not to mention that I have friends coming next weekend to see a concert that I have on Blu Ray waiting to hear it on the 11.1 channel system.
Stupid question but I have to ask, did you activate front height/wide speakers to ON under speaker set up?
Calibration does not activate these automatically, it does set them up (distance, volume, etc) but does not turn them on. That's why the first step prior to calibration is to select whether you have 2 subs or height+wide speakers, etc
Here is what the manual says after connecting the calibration mic
The speaker setting menu appears.

Let me know if you tried this. I found out you had to turn this on to be able to run 9 on my 5009
I hope this helps
