I just wanted to say that my 3010 is still running strong, no problems at all. No heat issues either.

Thanks for posting. Good to know that your 3010 is going strong. I plan on purchasing either a 3010 or a Denon AVR-4520CI pretty soon.

I wonder if multichannel analog inputs are still a very important feature to have at this point in time. I have been able to watch HD DVD movies with lossless audio since 2006 thanks to the analog inputs on my 2001 Onkyo TX-DS989 receiver. None of the high end Onkyo receivers have them this year. I wonder if I would still need this, or if sending PCM via HDMI would accomplish a similar goal?

It does not matter if you decode the losses audio in your player or your reciever, you will get the same sound. The only time this is potentially not true is if you decode in WIndows - Windows may mess with the audio (or it may not, I am not sure).

IMHO not really an important feature if your player has an HDMI connect. Also using the multi-channel analog inputs puts the bass management duties to the player not the receiver, not ideal. Also Audyssey will not be available as well. However sending PCM via HDMI will address these short comings.

I was wondering about future codecs that the current receivers won't be able to decode. That's when analog multichannel inputs would help. My 2001 Onkyo does not decode lossless, but my HD DVD does, so I used its multichannel analog outputs to listen to lossless audio on my receiver.

Since Onkyo stopped using multichannel analog inputs, I was wondering if sending PCM via HDMI would accomplish a similar goal with future audio codecs.

If the player can decode the codec internally and send it PCM via HDMI then yes. You just have to remember that the HDMI connection can only receive Multichannel linear PCM (up to 7.1 ch, 32–192 kHz, 16/20/24 bit).

This is what I was wondering about. I have been reading about the new 3D surround format that DTS may be bringing to the home, but I may not want to buy a new receiver to take advantage of it. So I have been thinking of getting a Denon AVR-4520CI with an analog multichannel input, or a 3010 without it.

Well as I just edited my reply, the HDMI connection for multi-channel PCM maxes out at up to 7.1 ch, 32–192 kHz, 16/20/24 bit, so if the newer codec exceeds that then no. Then again multi-channel analog inputs on the older Onkyo's are 7.1 so having them won't help you either.

I'm a little confused. I get that the TX-NR5010 is capable of 11.4 if paired with an external 2-channel amplifier. But is the TX-NR3010 capable of 11.2 via the same method? Or is the TX-NR5010 only one capable of 11-channel audio?

Also, how does Audyssey MultEQ XT32 work while using an external amp along with either of these receivers?

The TX-NR3010 is also capable of 11.4 with an external 2 channel amplifier.

they are selling the Onkyo 5009 for about 1/3 of retail...open box units are an extra 5% off of that price

3009 is selling for about 10% less than they are selling the 5009.....so a no brainer for the 5009 at just a 10% premium over the 3009

Does anyone that owns the 3010 or 5010, know if its having the same issues its little brother the ( tx-nr 818 ) is having? the 24p bug and hdmi handshaking problems/ audio drop outs? Or what bugs if any, does these 2 avr have? It would really help me thanks... im really thinking about jumping up to the 3010 or 5010 if it isn't having any problems.. thanks

So far, I've only had my Onkyo 3010 for a very short time. Everything has worked perfectly right out of the box and it has outstanding sound quality.
It replaced an older Onkyo 3008 that developed heat related HDMI board issues. Those symptoms started showing up after about 18 months of use. (that time frame seens to be about the norm.) That unit is being repaired right now in a shop in Largo, FL having the HDMI boards replaced under Onkyo warranty.

If you decide to purchase a 3010 or 5010, make sure to use a large cooling fan or multiple smaller ones. No exceptions. You can read about many, many good fixes right here in this forum by searching cooling fans.

and buy an extended warranty could be a recommendation as well

The 3010/5010 runs much cooler than previous years' models. You do not need to add a fan, though I do just because it makes me feel better and I already had a fan.

Feel lucky? Are you willing to bet they fixed this? I plan to keep using my fan.

No need to feel lucky, just need to not feel paranoid. Are you paranoid that Toyota and Lexus will have their steering fail during operation? Hundreds of thousands of them were recalled due to this very problem...willing to bet they fixed it on the new models?


My brother-in-law has been running a Battlestar Galactica marathon on BluRay. I will run the next session without a fan and then touch the top of the 3010 after 4 hours. 4 hours of high volume 9.2 action should satisfy you temperature wise, yes? I already did it after 1 hour and the top of the 3010 was what I would describe as "cozy warm"...this is the level of heat that feels nice after being outside on a cold, winter day in Pennsylvania. The two internal fans never kicked on (or if they did they are super quiet).

Remember to always have adequate ventillation space. When Onkyo says they need 8 inches of side and top clearance and 4 inches of rear clearance, that means do not put it in a space with less clearance than that (as an aside, the new Denon 4250 says it requires an entire FOOT of empty space around it).

Thanks sugarmilman, can you do me a favor tho and really take a good look at the contend your watching and see if you see the missing frame with 24p bug. it's so subtle, that even a lot of us missed it, but now that it was pointed out to me it's driving me and the rest of the 818 family nuts. I can almost deal with the 24p bug. but I need to know if it is having the same audio dropout problem as my 818.. I guess the only way to know for sure is to hook it up in my set up

the newer models run a lot cooler then previous but I do still run a big turbo fan on that puppy. cause we all know any and all heat is our worse enemy with electronics... so the cooler the better

I agree that my 3010 receiver seems to run significantly cooler than my 3008 did. But without really knowing at what temperature level the damages begin, I'm going to play it safe and use the fan I have. This new receiver cost North of $2 K and was a significant investment for me. Not one I can afford to risk.

Marco: I'll have to try that setting out and get back to you soon. Maybe other 3010 owners have noticed that?

Agreed...while a fan is now no longer needed, running one is still a smart thing to do. It can only help.

Lexus/Toyota has( had) a much better reputation for QC than Onkyo has had in the last say 5 years

so one could be inclined to trust something that has been very reliable in the past...even with a misstep...than something that has had a pretty infamous history for issues

Onkyo's reputation is not good..and hasn't been for several years now

You can read the myriad of pages on the subject of failure from actual Onkyo owners here in AVS forum

My personal experience with Onkyo has been with 5( of 6) units that had some type of failure....2 fixed under warranty with HDMI board and/or DSP issues....2 others replaced by Onkyo with new units...1 fixed with the "wire" issue from last year

The lone Onkyo product that I have owned that didnt have any issues was the PRSC885 preamp I owned a few years ago

Now ..if you know of a Toyota/Lexus owner that has owned 6 different products in the last 5 years .... 4 of which had problems that rendered the products unusable...then perhaps you can understand why expectation comes from a historical perspective of product performance

One of my replaced Onkyo's( a 5009) is still in the box that replaced a broken 905. After all the weeks it took for them to replace the unit I had already purchased another receiver

I don't understand why you would go out and buy another AVR when Onkyo was replacing your 905 with the 5009. Then to leave it sitting in the box just doesn't make any sense to me. You seem to be put off because it took several weeks to replace your 905 with a 5009. I would be ecstatic if my defective 905 was replaced with a 5009 even if it took a few months . Anyone else have a 3-4 year old AVR that failed and then have it replaced with a brand new current model AVR from the manufacturer?
