Definitely make sure you do the firmware upgrade BEFORE doing any setup.
Thanks.

I have the 5508 so I know about the clicking which is not a big deal IMHO.

Do you need 11.2 output? If not, no real reason to upgrade yet. If you do, I would compare the 3010 to the 5010 and see if the price difference is worth the upgrade. I went with the 3010.

yes I am beginning to think about going with the 3010 over 5010.
what are differences between them besides the gold terminals on 5010 and is that worth it?

Few more inputs/outputs, gold plated connectors. But the biggie is the Toroidal Transformer. I personally just got the 3010. More than enough power.

I think I will go with the 3010. the gold plated connectors aren't worth it I think. with the extra money would you suggest a emotiva amp or save the money?

How sensitive are your speakers? How big is your room?

Where did you buy it? I am ready for an upgrade. Looking at the 5010 and 3010, but with some of the recent HDMI problems I am having with my 3007, I am having a hard time giving Onkyo more money and looking seriously at the Denon 4520.
The 4520 has its own share of isues. Right now it has a problem with Neo:X I believe, though Denon promises a firmware update to fix it...they are pretty good about their firmware updates. You really cannot go wrong with either one...I went with Onkyo because I have never owned one and they beat Denon to the punch this product cycle - and I had the money but it was being slowly syphoned away on little things.
True. Sometimes it is hard to believe some of the problems that these higher end receivers have. With all of the bells and whistles these boxes have in them, I realize that there will be some issues. I am most disappointed with the fact that the Onkyo HDMI board issues spanned at least two generations. Maybe too early to tell if more, though I have not seen this issue on 009 series and later. My neighbor has a 3008 and had his fail last month.

Mine is under warranty so that is not e issue, rather unplugging everything, lugging it to the service center and being without a receiver for at least a week or more. The one really good thing is that I have an excellent local authorized service center close enough to me.

It also seems to me that Denon tends to support their products better than Onkyo. I really like the onkyo's so it is a tough decision. Thanks for the note.

Sent you a pm. Anyhow, I was in the same boat looking for upgrade but coming from an 805 with no problem. Went with the 3010 due to cost efficiency; gold connectors, extra watt, and toroidal doesn't bother me. Lastly, haven't heard too many issues with the 09/10 models.

.

I would recommend anyone buying an Onkyo to buy the extended 4-5 year warranty
It will likely be your friend.... of .the six Onkyos I have owned over the past 5 years...only one of them has not needed warranty work...the PRSC885 preamp
Onkyo has completely replaced two receivers of mine with new units

People are starting to have issues with the XX08 series as your neighbor is.My 5508 has been to the shop for the famous "wire" issue and I had an HDMI hiccup last week. if you read the forums about two years( and generally after the warranty is out) is about when the HDMI boards like to go south. Go back to the forums with the xx5 models etc...same cycle

Bottom line... extend your warranty

I did on the 5508 preamp and both 5009 receivers...I feel good about getting my return back and then some

^^^Definitely good advice and also something that I believe in as well. I do it with most high end components as well as cars!

My 3007 is still under the extended warranty and currently has HDMI issues. I have been babying it, i.e. leaving it on all of the time so that I won't be embarrassed at my Super Bowl party today!

It is just such a hassle to unplug everything, lug it to the service center and be without it for a week+. I use it all of the time so it sucks when not available. I suppose if I wasn't so lazy I could hook up an older backup, though most of my oldies do not have HDMI.

Thanks for the note.

if its an HDMI board count on it being gone about 3 weeks...maybe more if you have to ship somewhere to a service center

Onkyo makes their repair centers go through some extra steps due to the cost of the HDMI board...my understanding is that an HDMI board is about $800 to replace on the higher end Onkyos due to the DSP circuitry there

I say wait

there is no way I would pay retail....wait till they roll the new units and look around

I bought a new 5009 for about 33% of retail a few months after the 5010's came out...check frys electronics if you have one near you

Got my 3010! Pretty nice machine..still going through the setup. Question for the 3010 owners, did your onkyo came with the sticker tag in the front? Just wondering since most have theirs but not sure if higher end one's got rid of them. Thanks!
Mine came with the sticker, I removed it.

Make sure you DO THE FIRMWARE UPDATE BEFORE RUNNING AUDYSSEY. I ran into a lot of issues, did the firmware update, did a factory reset to remove my self induced horrors, and everything was smooth as silk.
What's so important about doing a firmware update if I may ask? I installed my 3010 a couple weeks ago without updating the firmware and it sounds fine. And What type of issue did you have before the update.
Yep did the firmware update and everything is running smoothly. Still testing it out though....so mine didn't come with the front sticker, do I need to be concerned? Maybe not brand new?

My front heights were not detected properly - the audio tones Audyssey sent to them were VERY VERY soft and muffled. It was as if I stuffed socks into the speaker cones. This then told the receiver I did not have them and it would not let me add them again. After doing the firmware update everything worked as it should. It was quite maddening.
I don't have any heights or wides yet so I didn't have a problem while running audysey. Thanks for letting me know though so if it happens to me in the future I will know the cause. Also do you think the heights add a lot to your setup and do you plan on running wides also?
If I can figure out how to install wides, I will install them. I like the expanded soundstage given by the heights. I notice the difference when I disconnect them. It is subtle, but noticeable.

Sigh. Time wears on and it appears $2,000 AVRs LOSE decent multi-zone capability, not make progress.

The Denon 4520 loses the capability of sending 2 channel PCM to the zones. Wonderful.

The 30/5010 CAN send 2 channel from an HDMI, UNLESS (crucially) it's also playing back in Zone 1? Then you're back to analogs only? Sheesh. Not even a "party mode" like the Denons and Yamaha for an HDMI input?

I never thought we'd still be messing around with analog interconnects in 2013 with flagship models, but I guess that shows you what I know.

Also, has anyone discovered a work around that will activate the 12V triggers without having to turn on the zones? What a goofy- if not unforgivable- omission on an 11 channel AVR that REQUIRES an external amp for operation.

I'm sorry but you really have to wonder what's going through the minds of these developers...just offering up a "feature" like multi-zone and then hamstringing it to death.

Did the Onkyo's and Denons ever send HDMI audio to multiple zones at the same time?

actually I find that the asian companies offer a lot more "tricks" than their more expensive A/V counterparts

look at the what I call the "pieces for the audio purist" and you will definitely see less features AND a higher price

I guess we have different views
I see the lack of multi-channel analog inputs as a minus...so therefore I am glad I have the 5009...actually a couple of them

I actually think there some more musical pieces( 2 channel audio) exist than what Onkyo offers....Oppo for instance...and use can use multichannel inputs to use the Oppo's DAC's

I only listen to discrete audio...so the various DSP modes and party modes are useless to me

Seriously the 12v trigger issue is ridiculous. Right now it works for me because I'm only using a 7.1 setup but when I decide to add the height and widths I'm not sure how to figure a way around the issue. The only thought I have is installing a smart outlet that can work from a remote contol, smart phone, or an iPad. Does anyone else have any ideas?
I have heard of smart outlets that turn on and off when the primary device is power cycled. Maybe that would work.

No, but 2 channel PCM from coax and optical ins.

I don't disagree with you on most fronts...I think "boutique" brand AVRs are some the hardiest jokes in our hobby, to be honest.

Still, kilobuck high end/flagship avrs touting multi zone playback should be able to play discrete digital sources in the zones in 2013. Sorry, not much is going to change my mind, here...as my 2+ old Denon 4311 does.
