Yep, you're right. Still just drives you nuts. I'll be damned if that and the zone issue are the ONLY things keeping me from buying and keeping this thing for the next 5 years.

Oh well...there's always next (this) year, right?

Still, kilobuck high end/flagship avrs touting multi zone playback should be able to play discrete digital sources in the zones in 2013. Sorry, not much is going to change my mind, here...as my 2+ old Denon 4311 does.

Most likely you and a small handful of other people used this feature, so it was not worthy to add it to the new lineup. Much like how we see the ancient analog connections vanishing.

I never use 1avr for 2 rooms. I just buy another amp or avr for the other room. 1 blu-ray player for two rooms would be such a pain in the ass. Especially since really good Blu-ray players and really good entry-level avr's aren't a big expense.

Not sure what you mean by "kilobuck" AVR's....give me some examples?

the asians have abandoned what I call flagship AVR's...and the true high end manufacturers never really played in that area

It was separates for them...

I do agree with you on some fronts...its hard for me to believe these units dont have multichannal analog inputs...

What manufacturers are not reducing the number of analog connectors?

B&K components
Rotel Audio
Krell Audio
Anthem
McIntosh

for starters

you ever go into a A/V shop that sells higher end gear?

Rotel and B&K are around the same price points as the Asian manufacturers

Dude, look at the back of the Anthem MRX-700

INPUTS
4 HDMI Inputs
Analog Video Inputs: 4 Composite + 3 Component
Digital Audio Inputs: 2 Coaxial + 3 Optical
7 Stereo Analog RCA Inputs
2 USB Inputs (MRX 700/500)
http://www.anthemav.com/products/anthem/a-v-receiver/mrx-700

That is not really a plethora of analog connectors. Seeing as they have not refreshed their line up since 2010, it is no real surprise they have not reduced their analog inputs for the last few years. In fact, they are still selling their 2006 products as their high end equipment...

Maybe you should get out of those AV shops, where the equipment stays "current" for almost a decade.

seriously?....I do believe the 700 was introduced in 2011...AND its actually a less expensive piece than the Onkyo 3010

IMO...anything over $2K should still have 7.1 analog inputs

I was actually thinking about the Anthem statement D2V when I mentioned analog connections in regard to Anthem...you know the piece that most call the "pinnacle" in the area of top of the line pre/pros

and ..FYI..perhaps you should visit some higher shops and you would know that flapship components dont change every year..

Even the Asians manufacturers, when they did have flagship items.. didnt change every year...Pioneer SC-09...Denon 5308/4810..Yamaha Z7/Z-11 all great examples around for multiple seasons unchanged....some of those units were the same price( or less) than the Onkyo 5010
I seriously doubt you will see anything next year from Denon to supplant the 4520 or Marantz with the new 8801 pre/pro
If you look at the used market ...several of the pieces I mentioned still bring a good $$ vs their original price

Clearly there is market for the "old" flagships

Look at Denon with the 4311....out for a couple of seasons and just replaced , still bringing a strong $$ for used and refurbed units

Not sure why you think a unit has to be released this year to be relevant

you should check and see what a 2-3 year old Onkyo receiver is bringing on the used market...you might be enlightened

Some of the XX08 series owners are not having the best time right now.......check out the xx08 forum

I bought a 5009 a few months for hundreds less than I could find a 4311 for....and the 5009 was a higher priced unit to start AND introduced later than the 4311

Meh, not worth it. You accomplished your goal of complaining that new receivers have less of what almost no one uses anymore, no need to continue discussing it.

Anyone know what the preamp output sensitivity is?

It seems my old TX-NR905 was only 1V and that most amps I'm looking at are 1.8v to 1.9v.

http://www.avsforum.com/t/884772/the-official-onkyo-tx-nr905-thread/7980

Thanks in advance!
What exactly is the Digital crossover that Onkyo offers? Do you speakers have to have no crossover to make us?
So, the TX-NR5010 manual states:
Rated RCA Output Level and Impedance
1 V/470 Ω (PRE OUT)
Maximum RCA Output Level and Impedance
5.5 V/470 Ω (PRE OUT)

Does this mean that output sensitivity is adjustable?!?

I'd hate to buy a 300 WPC amp, just to use 200 watts of it.

I looked at the setup area of my 3010 and could not find any place where to set the preamp sensitivity.
As an installer/sales I was hoping that the digital audio conversion would have advanced and been able to pull it through the HDMI input for multi zone. But as you said a small handful of people. on the up side more cables and in some cases more equipment get sold to make it work. Nice thing is all the internal digital media (sirius, pandora, vTuner) will play through 2nd and 3rd zones (really bout all I use for my 2nd zone)

No, it just tells you, that with an equivalent input signal (appr. 5.5 times higher than rated) the output stage might reach a max output voltage of 5.5 V depending on the load impedance.
The overall gain of the preamp is fixed, but you might lower it by using the volume control (sort of gain control).
Thanks gurkey. So does anyone have experience as to how much volume level is lost when using the TX-NR5010 with an Outlaw/ATI amp? It's input impedance is 10k ohms and it has a sensitivity of 1.95V.

Since the Outlaw's input impedance is much greater than the Onkyo's, I believe this means I would really see a real volume level drop as 1V is much smaller than 1.95V.

Anyone have issue when setting the Video output to 1080/24? Its as if the picture stutters. I have my Bluray set to output 1080p
post #830 of 912
I do not use 24Hz, but I figured I would give you a bump.

Questions about the x010 series and their 2 HDMI outs. My Integra DTC 9.8 is dying. I recently acquired some Meridian speakers with digital 24/96 coax in only. Now that I discovered NO pre/pro or receiver has S/Pdif coax out, I'm trying to solve that dilemma along with bumping up from 5.1 to 7.1 or higher for the HT portion in the new box. I've been feeding the Meridians from my Oppo for the two channel stuff. To complicate things even more I have an opportunity to get a matching Meridian center channel speaker. Well if I incorporated them into the 5.1 system and used the others to make 7.1 or 9.1, (width or height only, can't do backs) then comes the problem of no coax out. BUT what about the second HDMI out for audio through one of those HDMI 1.4a 2x2 matrix / switchers that also have digital coax out?
And what about my brain I'm trying to fry?

The only thing I noticed the second HDMI port not have which the first HDMI port has is that the second does not support HDMI-CEC. I am not sure how things would work without having a certified device on the other end, though.
Also, with the original signal usually being DTS HD MA or DTHD it will be dumbed down to go out s/pdif. Whoops. I need to rethink that. But I still need a pre/pro or receiver soon.
How many of you are running an 11.1 or more system? If so what are your thoughts. With either the 3010/5010.
Wow, I can't believe I read this whole thread and nobody has mentioned the outstanding up scaling video processing the Onkyo's have over all the other brands. I originally learned about the Onkyo receivers in the 80" Sharp TV thread. I watch Direct TV for all broadcast content and most of my casual movie viewing. I couldn't care less about the second room option. The wiring of a second room at my house would dictate a second receiver with any of today's options. I Had 7.1 in the ceiling prior to the Sharp I picked up last year. This year it was time for an audio upgrade. I used my speakers from my pool table room as spacers to fit the Sharp between the pillars of the entertainment center. I'll be damned if it didn't look like they belonged. Started researching different receivers and kept coming right back to the Onkyos for the superior video processing and 9.2 audio needed. Can anyone here suggest anything that can compare before I pull the trigger?

PS Many thanks to cybrsage and joerod for your contributions to this thread.

The closest thing to compare to is the Denon 4520, but the Onkyo has better video processing. I did not mention it because I use a HTPC and my video card has better processing than the AVR does. smile.gif
post #840 of 912
Do you run Direct TV through it?
