"Whats really in a name" Room build

Well here goes what will probably be a multi-year journey. This will be round three for me. My first theater room was more of a general purpose room so I guess it really couldn't be called a dedicated room. I did have almost total automation of all the lighting and everything in the room so it was fun. Almost two years ago now the house was partially destroyed by a house fire. This of course allowed me to make a few changes and upgrade all of my equipment. I kept the same room design becasue it worked for what we wanted. This bring us to the present. In less than two months my divorce will be final and I will be starting out again on my own.

I have put in an offer and had it accepted on a new house. Just waiting for the final bank approval on the short sale. One really nice feature in this house is that there is an attached 1 car garage that I have no use for as a garage becasue of the 5 car shop in the back yard. The attached garage is probably about 20' deep and 14' wide with minimum of 12' ceiling height. You actually step down into it from the house and the door is already in a corner on the back wall.

I couldn't have asked for a more perfect room location to finally build my own small escape from reality. It has actually been one of the features that I have been looking for since I started to shop for a new residence.

As part of the divorce I am keeping all of my new gear. I might leave the screen in the ceiling only becasue with a dedicated room I can do a DIY screen on a wall. I actually don't even remember most of my gear as it has been in storage since the rebuild becasue I never got to putting the equipment racks back in place.

The parts I do remember are

Panasonic AE4000 PJ
Paradigm LCR and subs
Axiom Surrounds
7.2 config
PS3 as a blu-ray player
Integra 50.2 reciever

This will be a slow start for me. For now it will be only speculation as I use this as a location to hash out my ideas for the room as my move in date gets closer.

I plan to keep the exterior of the house looking the same. So there will stil be a garage door, it will just be nailed shut. I am thinking about basically building a room within a room. I think I can keep the room size at a maximum by erecting new stud walls just slighty away from the original walls. I want to do at least two rows on risers. Might go as far as a snack bar in the back. Starifeld ceiling is a must this time around. For the screen wall I am completly up in the air. I have alway had motorized drop down screens so the thought of installing a fixed screen is a bit intimidating. I don't know if I want a stage area. I think they look cool but do they serve any realy purpose other that aesticits and a possible bass trap location?

If anyone wants to chime in with ideas I am pretty open at this point. Sure I may be putting the cart before the horse but it gives me time to dream and stay excited about something.

I love it when the cart is before the horse; that's where all the fun happens, right?

Assuming 20x14, I think the bar will be pushing it. However, you've got lots of overhead - so how do we put that to good use? Here's an idea: start with a really tall riser, like two or more feet, then build the tallest screen you can fit and treat it like IMAX - trade in your AE4000 for something really bright with great 3D and you'll get dizzy every time you fire it up wink.gif . Then just mask it down for regular stuff.

Here's another thought - there's probably an attic built over the garage just waiting to be turned into a giant IB sub. I don't know what that would require, but that's an opportunity that you don't get in every space.

Good luck with the sale. smile.gif
