JVC DLA-RS45U vs. Epson Pro Cinema 6010

When I went to pick up my Integra DHC-80.3 at the somewhat local audio/video shop I recently discovered, the gentlemen over there started talking with me and I told him how I have the theater room on the way and was planning on an Epson Pro Cinema 6010 projector. He immediately recommended the JVC DLA-RS45U over the Epson because of the lack on dynamic Iris in the JVC. He was explaining to me how in the dark scenes on the dark knight, you would see the blacks fade and darken over and over again when something bright happened like an explosion. I don't know much about the JVC other then on paper, it looks like the Epson has it beat with a higher contrast ratio, much higher refresh rate and much more light output.

For a completely light controlled room that will have a 110" screen and very OCCASIONAL 3D viewing, what projector would you guys recommend between the JVC DLA-RS45U and the Epson Pro Cinema 6010?

I was going back and forth between these projectors and luckily a local showroom had both setup in the same room! I'm an occasional 3D viewer as well but for me the RS45's 3D just isn't usable, I saw a lot of ghosting and would watch same 3D BluRay on the Epson and see none. Also the Epson is much brighter than the JVC in 3D. We did a lot of A/B comparison of black levels between the JVC and Epson on dark movies like Underworld and the bottom line is to us they both look great. There both great projectors but if you were doing 2D only I'd say the JVC is a great choice as well. The shadow detail the Epson did in Underworld was quite impressive yet still providing excellent blacks. So we bought the Epson and there is no looking back, we've had it about 6 months and LOVE LOVE LOVE it. I know JVC has had a history of premature lamp dimming, not sure if it's fixed on the RS45 but that was a concern as well considering how expensive the JVC lamps are compared to the Epson.

It really depends on how important 3d is to you. I have the JVC and have compared it to the Epson on 2D. Blacks and detail are very important to me that is why I went with the JVC. That being said the Epson is better on 3D and very good for 2D. It is a great all around projector. If you only watch 3D once in a while I would recommend the JVC since I love the blacks. I previously owned Epson projectors and I can see the difference. Some 3d movies do look ok but others show some ghosting. It also depens on the size of your screen. If the screen is large and you don't have a fully light controlled room I would probably recommend the Epson since it is brighter in 3D mode. The lamps are also less expensive. Both are great projectors it depends what is most important for you.
