I read the same review. I can only surmise that room accoustics/placement are at work here. If you read through this entire thread you will find other reviews that report soundstage characteristics much like I reported. Of course I haven't heard the speakers he compared the M1 to, perhaps they are even better.
Just like any other speaker, the only way you will know if you like it's characteristics is to hear them for yourself, preferably in your own room.
As far as price category comparisons, with the M1, I wouldn't stop at comparing them to $2000 speakers.
