Onkyo Unveils Three High-End A/V Receivers, Including New TX-NR5010 Flagship - Page 3

I think the toroidal amplifier is only of theoretical benefit, anyway. I doubt it could be successfully ABX'd.

Hi,

Is there a pdf of the manual of the TX-NR5010 available? So far I have only been able to find the datasheet.
I hope to receive this unit in the coming weeks, it will replace my 5007 (broken HDMI-board).

I perused the manual and it appears that indeed the second zone can handle (2) channel PCM but from HDMI ONLY. (?)

Crikey, it seems the 2 channel PCM from optical/coax that Denon can do will never be "matched" by Onkyo. Unless I'm interpreting something incorrectly here.

And yes, it's useful (over analog) for a few reasons...

Zone 3 is analog only...still!? So anyone who wants to ship music from an appletv or comparable device is sol without incorporating some goofy workaround?

Sorry, but a 2 to $3,000 AVR needs to do this in 2012.

Looks like J&R is starting to sell all three with a shipment date of 8/2

i just found out about this and will read everything but just looked at specs quickly. Up until now no receiver could send hdmi audio over zone 2. This is such a big deal if the 3010 & 5010 can be the first to finally fix that problem. Here is just one example, sometimes I want to play webcasts form laptop to zone 1 & 2. The video goes to zone 1 TV via hdmi and the audio goes to both zones from my optical out/headphone jack on laptop (i have an hdmi and rca balun in kitchen island) but it doesnt work very well for sound over zone 2 this way and tweaking audio device managemet in control panel is goofy. If I can plug in via hdmi only and send audio over zone 1 and 2 from computer I will be doing cartwheels. I have been waiting so long for that and hope I am not misunderstanding. Up until now there has been some issue with parallel clocking with hdmi that has prevented hdmi aud to zone 2. This would be so huge. I hope I am undertsanding right.

i think you are goiong to be able to get what you want. I have the 3010 and you can do a sort of picture-in-picture (insta-prevue) with hdmi sources
post #70 of 93
I wish we could test computer hdmi connected to pc designated hdmi on receiver. Then play a you tube vid for instance on the computer. Will the audio go to zone 1 and 2 along with video to the main zone 1 tv with only an hdmi connection from computer to receiver? The way its been you would need an analog connection from computer for audio and the video travels over the hdmi. It does not work well. The specs seem to state this can finally be accomplished and would be huge news.

Hola all:

Can someone verify/correct me on something? If my recollection is ok, I seem to remember the XXX7 and XXX8 Onkyo series AVRs getting fantastically reduced- perhaps not immediately- but somewhere down the road they got somewhere near 50-60% of their original MSRP's.

But then came the XXX9's and- again unless I'm mistaken- they seemed to never see the substantial drop offs in price. Certainly not list of course, but you simply weren't going to be picking up a 3009 for ~$1200 like I distinctly recall seeing the 3008 going for. And there wasn't really much in the groundbreaking changes dept between them to boot (?...again, if memory serves).

Basically- assuming my assertion's even remotely correct- I'm just wondering if anyone has any insight on this current crop. I realize no one has a crystal ball, but I'm hoping this general economy- combined with a little bit of favorable Onkyo AVR price history- may make the 3010 available for around 15-$1600 somewhere no-so-far down the road.

Of course I have a perfectly useful and excellent-performing Denon 4311, but what fun would it be to keep it and go without useless 4k upscaling and DTS Neo X?! tongue.gifwink.gifbiggrin.gif

thanks

I CANNOT BELIEVE this just cut me off after spending/wasting an hour of my time writing my review and warning of a defect. I have owned 2 of these TX-NR5010s and many would have benefited from my experience with these units. Sorry folks, I cannot write it again. Trust me....never, never, NEVER update your firmware on Onkyos. You will be sorry.

What happened, did you "brick" your unit? I have a 1010 that I firmware updated before doing any calibrations and everything went fine. So far not impressed with XT32 though, I seemed to have lost a lot of the bass "impact" that my 809 with XT had.
^^ Yes, please explain. It doesn't do anyone any good to simply say:

Sorry, I don't know you so don't ask me to trust you.

Plenty of people have updated their firmware. Without additional details they might assume you're upset for any number of reasons ranging from you needed to run Audyssey again (expected) or that your 5010 became inoperative (unacceptable).

Just a few details would suffice.
Having had two Onklyo receivers, the 875 and, currently, the 5008, I wouldn't waste my money on another Onkyo product. My 5008 just lost the pre-out back surround channels. Since its out of warranty, I'm not taking it in to be fixed again. Good luck with your purchases.
Yup, unit bricked but not my fault, as downloaded manual, studied for a week prior to touching, followed instructions exactly, and have successfully updated multiple times before on my other Onkyos. Fine other dude, don't trust me, I couldn't care less if you ruin yours.

For those with common sense, you can repeat others errors or listen to their advice. You might get lucky, and have no problem, but a wise person will weigh the cost benefit of a few improvements versus a real risk of total destruction of $3000 receiver, time wasted, risk of damage returning, down time, hassle, etc.

BTW Onkyos own forum full of other models being bricked after firmware update, since there is no way to roll back to working firmware, or even try a re-install of a new one.

I like my replaced one, but will never try again to update.
Thanks for the details.

I don't blame you - firmware updates make me itch.

I had to send in a Panasonic Blu-Ray player after a FW update bricked it too. It was repaired under warranty but dealing with customer service was a hassle, they treated me like I was an idiot (how many ways are there to screw up clicking an "OK" button?). Even people on the AVS forum treated me like an idiot. Trust me tongue.gif

Calling Panasonic customer service is hell. Absolute hell. Fortunately it's not necessary too often.

Having to pay to ship it to them was another insult, but it was nowhere near what it probably costs to ship this AVR.

Onkyo needs to get its act together with firmware updates.

If you would do your firmware updates offline using an USB stick, you wouldn't have to go through this.
Online updates usually are more of an hassle although the download will be verified always before the update process will start, so no harm should be done normally.
Just rerun.

Thanks for the warning and efforts.

I learned two things today, don't update firmware and if I am ever going to write more than a few words I will write them in Word and then cut and paste into the forum when it is all done.

Both are likely to be due to the same problem:  poor/intermittant Internet communications.

I was looking to purchase a pre/pro but Onkyo only has the older PR-SC5508 model (I'm in the US). Can I use this new TX-NR5010 as a pre/pro at all?

Or is there a Pre/Pro coming out soon to replace the SC5508?
is this the main thread?

Why go for 5010 over the 3010?

Anyone know if Onkyo will be coming out with a unit that has the asynchronous USB?
Well, even though the 5010 has 11.2 channel sound that fact that it does not have triggers for the main was a more pressing problem so I broke down and got the Integra DTR-80.3.

The first manufacturer to have 11.2 channel processing whether through and external amp or internals that has triggers for main will get get my next upgrade purchase!!!! eek.gif

I hope all you mfg reps are reading and listening!!!!!!! cool.gif

I already have the speakers and the extra external 2 channel amp waiting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Denon 4311CI was released in Oct 2010 and can do 11.2 (w/2CH amp) and has (2) 12v triggers each of which can be set for a number of different instances to include main zone, Zone 2, or Zone 3. The new 4520CI just recently released also has the same capability.

On another note, the 4520CI also features Zone 4(HDMI) similar to the lower model Zone 2(HDMI) on the 3313CI released back in June.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I hate to buy a several year old design so I will wait for a "current" model that has the latest DACs, room balancing software, internet capability, etc.

When the 4311 first came out I thought it was the beginning of a trend and it would not be long before an AVR with 11 internal amps would be on the market.

Unfortunately that has not been the case so the market waits for the be all to end all receiver to be announced.

The rear panel, smaller picture, looks remarkably similar to my old TX-NR5007 with the exceptions of the VGA PC input, and Integra brand label.

Of note, My TX-NR5010 no longer has the universal port, or any S-video inputs. While new Onkyos went with MHL (mobile high def link) which, while able to charge your smartphone and use it as a source with a USB cable, is IMHO inferior to units with Apple AirPlay (if you have Apple stuff) which lets you be wireless. A simple work-around to use either is plug a $100 Apple TV into an HDMI port for wireless capabilities, and the newer Onkyo device app will control AVR with extras like proportional volume control by tilting your cell phone/mobile device, if you want to turn that feature on.

Tech marches on. Haven't thrown out my Harmony remotes yet, since easier to hold, and saves the cell phone batt. One nice advantage to cell AVR control is it uses your WiFi network enabling non line-of-sight, and much longer range control, from any room in the house or even outside.

I so want 11.2 and unfortunately the 80.3 only does 9.2 but having the trigger out was more important to have since I use two external amps, one for center and one for front l/r.

When someone comes out with 11.2, trigger out, analog in, then I will be upgrading.
