help, LCD and LED tvs have spots and streaks

i got this....

when the pic pans across the sky or a wall, i can see light spots or streaks in the pic. its very dim, but its always there. its like a veil thats always there, but sometimes it harder to see than other times. when the picture pans, its easier to see. i can easily see it when i load the Netflix app, when theres a lot of red on the screen. i can also see it on close ups of peoples faces, esp if they move around a bit

thoughts? i already missed the 30 day return option, but i do have a 5 year warranty for it.

i was thinking maybe i could use the screen scrubber/pixel flipper, or whatever its called, thats part of Disneys WOW calibration disc. i have no clue if that will work, im new too all this

Did you buy it from Costco? According this their return policy is 90 days for TVs, and, in my experience, you can generally talk with them and get them to accept returns on electronics even beyond that point.

Could you post any pictures or photos of what you're seeing? Almost sounds like what some of the folks around here call the "dirty screen effect", but it's hard to say.

yes, i did buy my tv from Costco. i bought it online and i thought i read that i had 30 days to return it to a store, but ill double check.... thanks

heres some pics of other peoples TVs that kinda look like what my tv is doing, but mine looks more blotchy or cloud shaped vs streaks or perfect circles. mine also doesnt look as noticeable, but im worried it will get worse over time

What settings have have you tried changing , such as reducing the backlighting, for picture mode you are using on the TV?
Do you possibly still have the store/retail settings with which the TV's ship instead of one of the Home modes in use?

those photos show vertical and horizontal banding, which is usually a LCD panel issue... all you can do for that is exchange the TV for another of the same model or consider another brand/model

heres what i have it set to, but ive played with all of these, which doesnt do much for the problem im having

Picture Mode = Custom

Backlight = in the middle

Contrast = same

Brightness = same

Color = same

Tint = same

Sharpness = same

Color Temp = Natural

Ambient Light Sensor = off

all other processing = off

there is a mode for Home or Store, i have it set to Home

i just checked my paperwork, i do have 90 days to return it

my BluRay player is supposed to be here Thursday. ill see how it looks with that

Your pics appeasr only show the backlighting, I suggest that you lower the backlighting more and that you set the sharpness to 0. Then check with a program image on the screen and try your contrast and brightness settings.

I'm very sure the OP has either banding like in the pics or DSE... not something that picture settings can fix.

the pics i posted are not of my TV. i posted them to give everyone an idea of what my TV is doing. i dont have steaks or perfect circles like those in the pics. i have spots that are irregular. they look like clouds

In any case it is a screen uniformity issue or DSE and cannot be fixed by changing picture settings.

Reducing the backlighting can reduce the effects of banding. Setting the sharpness to 0 will not effect bandingt but can eliminate artifacts.
Since you have a 120Hz unit do you have motion compensation enabled? If no set it to a low value which can reduce image blur especially diuring panning scenes.
Have you tried the presets for any other home mode besides Custom?
Plasma may mean SDE (Screen Door Effect) and not DSE.

like I said this is most likely a screen uniformity issue (panel and/or backlight based) and so it won't go away by lowering backlight since all that will do is make the whole screen dimmer, not more uniform

it could also be the dirty screen effect which has to do with the AR/AG coating on the screen being unevenly applied

Since the problem is most noticable when theri is a lot of white mytrain of thought is that the screenis too bright and should be reduced by lowering the backlighting and possibly changing the brightness or contrast.
With the representative 600 x450 jpg images in his post it is hard to really see the problem.

The following interesting post lists one users efforts to change and fix his system settings .

ok, so i returned the JVC tv to Costco and bought this..

yesterday i returned the Vizio and picked up the Samsung UN50EH6000, a backlit LED tv from Costco and sure enough, theres a big light spot, about the size of a human head, right in the middle of the screen

in disbelief, once again

Look up plasma dse and you'll see the issue pops up there too. The anti-glare coating on a lot of flat panel sets isn't helping. For lcd it seems once you go over 42" banding and dse is almost unavoidable.

the Panasonic 50" ST50 is probably the best option at this point for a good mid-range plasma (with a dark screen filter for daytime viewing)

IF YOU WANT A THIN FLAT PANEL LED, YOU MUST BE WILLING TO PUT UP WITH VERTICAL/HORIZONTAL BANDING, DIRTY SCREEN EFFECT, LIGHT BLEEDING FROM THE EDGES, POOR UNIFORMITY, AND BLOBS OF LIGHT OR DARK AREAS.

IT IS VISABLE ON EVERY SINGLE SET OUT THERE - SOME ARE WORSE THAN OTHERS. I'M ON MY 6TH SET, AND I'VE VIEWED 100s.

nothing's perfect (pick your poison), but some LED-LCDs are definitely worse than others and some people are pickier about screen uniformity than others (I am very picky about screen uniformity issues which is why I avoid all edge-lit LED-LCDs)

Samsung seems to have the most issues in this area with their LED models, especially on the ES series (though some samples can be pretty good relatively speaking... yet the majority are not).


BTW, which makes/models have you gone through? Perhaps that info can help others here trying to decide what to exchange/return and what to settle for.

My 70LE845U is edge-lit and has none of the problems you describe.
My calibration runs it at 50% backlight and the black level is uniform across the screen
and all colors display evenly, with no hot or dark or dirty spots to be seen.
My big issue is the native color of the LEDs themselves, which concentrate in the blue band.
As they age, they will lose more and more of their green, yellow and red capabilities.
Reds, in particular, clip early in order to maintain intensity comparable to the blues.
I hope the science of cold lighting takes a turn for the better and soon...

heres the 3 tvs that ive had problems with...


JVC JLC47BC3000 (LCD) = had 2 bright spots on it, and a few, brighter, angled streaks

Vizio E472VLE (LCD) = had 2 bright spots on it, and a bunch of brighter, vertical streaks

Samsung UN50EH6000F (Backlit LED) = has 1 large, brighter spot, right in the middle of the screen

I second the motion. I will never go back to lcd after getting a plasma. granted plasmas have their own problems. but its much easier to deal with the lcd problems.

I tend to agree. Previously I was using a 42" Panasonic plasma which had a great picture without any flaws, now I have an LG 55LW5000 which definitely suffers from the dirty screen effect. Based on my experience, I definitely would go back to plasma for my next TV.
