Assistance with Equipment and Layout (6.1)

Hey guys,

I've been having a tough time in the new house getting my setup to sound as good as it once did. I can't tell if it's my room setup or some of the settings on my equipment. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am currently using the following:

Receiver..................Yamaha RX-V663................20Hz-20KHz
Center....................Polk Audio CS20..................48Hz-25KHz
Surrounds................Mirage Nanosat..................110Hz-20KHz
Sub........................Mirage Powered Sub............120Hz (Recommended Crossover)

I've ran the YPAO setup for the receiver and saved those settings. It looked like it did a great job of figuring speaker size and distance but the audio levels seem very off.

It set the surrounds to "small", the CS20 to Large, and the crossover to 120Hz.

Also, if you know how to ensure 6.1 comes through with this receiver please let me know. My most used devices are the Xbox 360 w/ HDMI and a Samsung Bluray player w/ HDMI.

I was hoping someone might have a similar setup or could provide some advice on the settings for this equipment or layout.

Below is a diagram of the room:
note: The Surround Back speakers are mounted high up in the corners, upside down (per Mirage's recommendations)
The subwoofer is on the floor, just below where the "right" channel is.
The Right/Left Channel speakers are actually on the TV stand and not on the wall.

Thanks again for any help with this!

the basic problem is the "corner setup" for the TV and the primary front left and right speakers firing across each other.

Any chance at all the TV could be moved to the "drawing bottom wall" where the "right front" speaker is mounted ? You need to consider where the prime viewing position is, because there is no way both couches will get the full surround effect. Only one couch can be the prime position.

very few rooms allow a perfect setup, but the closer you get to the recommended layout, the better it will all sound.

I've moved the Front Left and Right to being on the TV Stand. It's a little cramped but sounds better. They are the omni directional speakers so there's no way to really direct the sound.

I put the Yamaha YPAO mic between the two couches, centered off of the rear surround speaker when I ran the calibration. I also had it at ear level per the instructions. I bumped the levels of the surrounds just a couple ticks and left everything else. It was set to FLAT EQ when it ran. Most of the time I have it set on Straght Enhancer when listening. Is there much to be gained by manually configuring each speaker's frequency levels in this setup?

It sounds like I'm going to be limited though with the way the room and furniture are setup. I would like to have great sound for the most seats instead of one perfect and one lacking. I think this comes close to achieving this.

If I'm playing Xbox or something I'll sit in the middle with an office chair and it sounds amazing smile.gif

Thanks for the response! smile.gif
