I've been trying for the last two days to set up FreeNAS but I can't get it to run. I keep getting errors trying to get it to load from installation. I think I'm going to scrap the idea and put my old PC back in storage for when I'm in my occasional mood for legacy gaming - maybe one day Lucas Arts will re-release X-Wing (anyone remember Fleet Defender - the other old game I used to love playing). Anyway, I think I'm just going to continue watching .avi, .ogg, and .mkv files as I have been - the HTPC with XP Pro. I thought it would be nice to have a DLNA server using FreeNAS but as I said I can't get it going. Are there other options that I can consider that wouldn't cost much? I'm thinking about setting up a 2 hdd mirror raid for content backup on the HTPC, I found a fair deal on 1TB drives so I though it would be a good opportunity to set up a backup system for videos and pictures.
