Hi,

Posted this thread on the LCD section and thought it would be good idea to post my request for help here too in case there aren't that many who look at the LCD section.

(Mods - please delete this if it is against the policy. Thx)

Thanks!

Hello,

Would appreciate if you can provide your thoughts on the flat panel TVs that you think would be a best fit for my bright living room.

Currently have a four-year old 46 inch Samsung LCD that I am quite happy with, touchwood. Planning to upsize.

TV purpose: No gaming; primarily watch regular cable (Verizon FIOs), movies and sports. Watch Netflix regularly; currently streamed wireless thru blue-ray dvd player. Internet surfing - not much right now, but will increase if TV provides for easy access.

Budget - $2.500 to $3,500.

Basically boils down to:

1. LED or plasma?

2. 60 or 65 or 70 inch? - Plan to wall-mount it; Distance from couch to TV is ~ 12 feet.

Some pictures of my living room to illustrate how bright it can be :

- first two show the floor-to-ceiling glass walls on the west (left side) and north; though windows are tinted and I have blinds, there are no tall buildings in the west. As a result, LR is exceedingly bright in the summer evenings thanks to the glorious sun.

- second two show the white wall (facing the west windows) where I plan to mount the TV.

Depth from white wall to couch on the west wall is about 12 ft:

Thanks a lot!

Request to those owning the Panny ST/GT series or the Samsung E6500/E8000:

Can you comment on your TV w.r.t:

- wide angle views? (does picture dim when you move away from the front of the tv?)

- pq if room is bright (is it that bad that you can't see anything?)

- keeping price aide, any particular aspect that made you choose your specific model over the other one?

Thanks! smile.gif

The plasmas all have a very wide horizontal viewing angle - no issues there.
The Panasonic ST/GT/VT50 models have a louver screen filter that helps reduce light reflections, especially from above the screen, not as much from the sides or straight on.
The 2012 Panasonics are also reportedly brighter than the Samsung models for reference.

The Panasonics may be brighter but seemingly in a bright room - at least according to CNET - the Samsungs are better. I quote:

"The ST50 showed slightly gray blacks compared with the E6500 under full sunlight, with the screens facing an open window during daytime. If you had a toss-up between the two plasma TVs and daytime usage in a very bright room was one of the main considerations, this difference would tip us in favor of the Samsung"

Thank you!

So tempting to pull the trigger on a 65 inch plasma; if it does not go well with my LR's brightness, I can always return it and go with an LED (the 70inch Sharp Quattron was highly recommended by some tech guys who gave a free estimate for wall mounting). Problem is I am a lazy bum who is not that sure how to re-pack and transport/ship a 65 inch TV back to the store all by himself. smile.gif

Thanks again,

oh, I didn't read this full testing review on cnet and missed this! Thanks a lot for providing the link; much appreciated. smile.gif

Given the cnet's observation that there were a few areas in which the flagship 8000 did better than the 6500, I am going to read about the TV's on our site. Sigh, just when I thought I had it narrowed down between two models now comes a third one.... I love this confusion!! biggrin.gif

Thanks again,
