Placing acoustic material behind pantings?

Hi, I'm trying to reduce some of the echo in my living room when watching movies. Its about 18x25" with a 15" peaked ceiling. The reflections in this room are so bad that its hard to understand dialog in a movie. When I pause a movie, you can hear the sound continue in the room for a portion of a second.

We have two 3x5 oil painted canvas frames on the rear wall. I am thinking of buying 1" acoustic material and placing it behind the paintings. But I know the oil painted canvas is not as transparent as speaker cloth. My question is, do you think this would help at all? Here is a crude diagram of the room.

0 = speaker
x = painting

(sorry I can't seem to make this work on these forums. Hopefully you get the idea)

Thanks.

I don't think that will do much good - an oil covered canvas is pretty reflective, and it's that mid-high range area that you're concerned with... Better to concentrate your efforts on the side walls - there are lots of attractive options for acoustic wall panels. You might start by just bringing more soft stuff into the room, too - pillows, blankets, etc. If there's not carpet in the room, a nice thick rug would be a big plus.

Here is a diagram that is more accurate. As you can see, I can't really put panels on my side walls either.

I guess I should purchase real panels and maybe replace the painted canvas with them?

What's the flooring material? If the room is echoing that badly I think you're going to need something more than a couple of wall panels...
