I’ve just noticed all the talk about this review and Steinway Lyngdorf.
I’m the UK distributor for Steinway Lyngdorf and the guy who wrote the review came to my listening rooms.
I haven’t read the full thread but I know there were lots of people saying the guy who wrote must be deaf, stupid or a liar. I’ve also noticed that there’s someone in the UK on this Forum who wants to come for a listen and is suggesting he can’t arrange a dem which is BS. I work from home and you are welcome to contact me and come for a demonstration whenever you like. Evenings and weekends are usually fine.
The guy who wrote this is very real and we have done the first fix on his cinema which is being installed in central London. This amazing cinema will be completed in time for Xmas at which time he’ll be posting more info about the installation.
I’ve sold solely high end home cinemas for 25 years and so high SPL levels are something I’m very familiar with. One of the speakers that are good at delivering high SPL’s that some of you will know is the Triad Platinum LCR. I’m very familiar with these speakers and the rest of the Triad range because as the UK distributor I used to keep them in my listening rooms.
I can assure you that the tiny Steinway Lyngdforf S15’s can play just as loud as these speakers, given they are partnered with the right Boundary Woofers, which in our dem rooms means a pair of Steinway Lyngdorf LS woofers, corner loaded.
If someone I didn’t know well was telling me that a pair of small wall mounted woofers with a 5.25” cone could play as loud as a huge 94.5db efficient satellite speaker with twin 10” drivers, I would call them a Moron. However this is the case as anyone is free to come and put to the test.
You may not like it, but Steinway Lyngdorf systems really do work differently to any other system that I’ve ever encountered. And yes it does play much louder than just about any other system with no discernible distortion and no visible movement from the cone.
I still can’t explain how this works, however the crossover between woofers and speaker is typically over 200Hz. The other thing that’s very different to most other systems is that the Boundary Woofers are corner loaded for timing reasons and this roughly quadruples their output.
The more remarkable thing is that the system is designed for use in an untreated “live” room. Because of this, the room itself adds a great deal of gain that is then corrected with the room correction system, whereas most other high end cinemas use quite a bit of treatment that will absorb a great deal of the systems output.
I hope anyone in the UK on this Forum will contact me, Rob, directly via the link on my website at www.geckohomecnema.com
and arrange an audition. You can see that our dem rooms aren’t much like a cupboard. Please feel free to come armed with all that software that you know will make a cinema system fall flat on its face and report back to this Forum on your findings. We use all the usual clips Master & Commander, Open Range, Saving Private Ryan, King Kong, Flight of the Phoenix. Unusually we also always play some Beethoven some Gershwin, some Adele and some dance music with subterranean bass. Why? Because this is the only surround system I’ve ever heard that has the deep bass and the dynamics for movies and the fidelity for music. It really is much, much clearer than any other system I know of, largely because of its unique all digital electronics.
Since we’ve had the systems I’ve had visit from 2 of the UK’s leading recording studios. One of them is British Grove Studios, owned by Mark Knopfler and the other one is even more famous but cannot be named as there is a commercial conflict. The engineers from both studios couldn’t believe what they were hearing and conceded that the system sounded better than what they used in the studio.
We also deal with a lot of clients in the TV, film and music industry and Steinway Lyngdorf systems are the only audio systems I’ve ever had that I can confidently demonstrate to any of them.
Here are some quotes from recent visitors from the UK Forums:-
“I don't have the words in my vocabulary to convey just how good that set up was. Let's just say, that everyone sat there in awe”
“I have never heard anything like it, it was that good I don't even know how to describe it, I've listened to a few decent sets of speakers in my time, B&W 800D's, Kef Blades, Proac Carbon 8's, Naim Ovator 600's and a few more to boot and these just bettered each one of them by a MASSIVE amount - absolutely breath taking!”
“The Steinway Model S sounded better than any other system I’ve ever heard.”
“Although I have been to lots of AV shows and had many demo's of excellent home cinema systems I have to say that what I heard and witnessed on Sunday made most of those memories pale into insignificance.”
“The bigger Steinway system was breath taking……the sound was immense…..the bass was unreal I thought Rob has installed bass shakers in the sofa's by far the best film watching experience I've ever had, no other home system, cinema or imax has ever come close.”
“Both Steinway set ups were the best I've heard for home cinema, the smaller system (think its model S) just defied everything I've previously read. Very small, about the size of a decent hard back book, speakers with small 4" mid range drivers placed in a large room with no acoustic treatment and they sounded so big and clear and blended perfectly with the subs.
“I have no hidden agenda and no reason to exaggerate how good the Steinway Lyngdorf systems are. So believe me when I say that from the huge stereo pair to the 2 different sized home cinema systems, the scale, dynamics and clarity of the soundstage was a joy to behold. We are talking truly reference.”
“In my opinion the best dem rooms I have ever seen.”
“Absolutely amazing, the best demos I’ve ever heard or seen”
By the way if you visit in December I’ll have the Steinway Lyngdorf LS Concert system here. The only audiophile system I know that can provide THX volume levels from over 50m away.
Please let me know anytime you would like to come for a dem.
God Save the Queen!
