I still havent picked up a AVR yet. And was told that a Screen is going to cost me like 1,000 bucks lol... I didnt know that.. I thought they were like 500.. So im going to put some more money away before I pick up my projector and screen

The stage looks great!

I don't know a ton about screens, but $1000 seems very expensive. If you order screen material and stretch it across a frame it will be a lot cheaper. As an example, SeymourAV Centerstage XD is only $21.95 per linear foot.

If you aren't doing an acoustically transparent setup, then you have even more options. I went with a Wilsonart Designer White laminate screen, for instance, which only cost about $100 and a little bit of time to build it.

Well I am getting the hurry up bug... I want it all finished but my funds are running low right now and still have plenty of things to buy and trying to figure out he best order to get them in...

I still need.

1. A AVR. Been going back and forth on a Onkyo 818 and a Denon 4311... I want to save the money but feel like I will be shorting myself If I do.

2. Seating.. Dont know if I should pick up now or wait for some black friday specials maybe..

3. Prjoector and Screen .... This drives me crazy everyday...I was going to go with a 16:9 screen and now I heard projectors like the RS45 can easily do 2:35... And as far as screen been doing much reading and asking many questions about gain and how to build and what type to get...

So any suggestions what order I should buy these things.. I would say in 2 or 3 months I want to have it all...

As far as equipment I would suggest saving your pennies and ordering everything all at once. If you plan on sitting on the equipment over the next few months it makes more sense to buy it when you need it rather than have it sitting around and using up the warranty.

AVS is a great place to get a projector. B-Stock units are a great buy and come with full warranties. So many options on the screen. I tried out seven different samples, from five different companies. The Elite screen was by far the least expensive and looked good, but there were a couple of things that it didn't do well with in my room.

Not sure what the rules are on posting links to places to buy equipment but there is one place that sells referb Onkyo and Denon AVR's. Could save some cash buying a refurb and put the savings towards something else. Whichever you choose make sure it has pre-outs for an external amp should you choose to go that route. I'm using an Onkyo 808, with an external amp running my L-C-R, and the AVR powering my surrounds. I'm very happy with this setup.

Seating could be a couple of couches for now. Personally I would worry about seats later and concentrate on purchasing the equipment you want. Better off buying a nice projector and screen, than skimping on those two items in favor of nicer seats.

Everything is looking great so far. You're a lot farther in your build than I am....

Good advice... I was thinking the same thing as far as refurbs on the AVR. My big problem is screen and aspect ratio I guess. I read that the Jamestown frames with seymour screen is pretty good.. Then I also see ELITE which come in at a nice price as well.. I want to go 2:35 but dont want to be dissapointed in the end

Ok Well I am off to another thing..

I am thinking about setting something up like a HTPC or a streamer in the theater... I own a WD live and have pretty good knowledge at building computers built plenty of them..

Question is which way should I go.. I want to be able to play bluray flawless and 3d as well.. I dont care about the menus or anything like that...I am sure there are a ton of programs that will rip my blurays down to just the movie without losing any quality in sound or picture..

Any suggestions on which way to go.. The media streaming section is packed with stuff but not sure which route to take

After doing hours upon hours of reading tonight.. I was thinking of giving the Jamestown / Seymour screen a shot.... Getting 120 inches for half of the coset I am wondering if it would be worth it or just go with something like a Elite screen.. I was recommended a Carada but at the heavy 1k price tag it threw me off
post #71 of 166
On the HTPC issue, follow Assassins guides! They are simple and great info in them.

His thread has tons of info, but you can buy his guide for like $10.00. Well worth it in my opinion, it will eliminate tons of hours on researching and my time is worth money, sure yours is too!!

Just looked him up and ya sounds very good at what he does .... How many hard drives do you have in your seup

Don't choose your screen until you have the projector. Then order samples from different companies. Most will send you an 8.5x11 sample free of charge. Da-lite is rather cheap and sends a very small sample. You must purchase a larger one from them (20x20in).

I put all my samples on a poster board hanging in front of some white backed blackout curtians. I ran though a lot of different material and it was interesting to see how each screen looked given what was being projected on it.

The elite looks very good but in my setup it tended to sparkle with bright scenes. I didn't care for the da-lite. Carada and Draper were both good looking screens and Seymour XD looked good as well.

Finally settled on the Carada BW 110" 16:9.

Make sure your room is painted the colors they are going to be or at least primed a dark color. I made this mistake at first and the black levels looked horrible. Once I primed the room dark grey and tried again the picture quality was vastly better.

Thanks for the info about the screen.. I dont get what you are talking about sparkle with the elite? What is your setup.. My walls and ceiling all been primed grey and painted over with flat black sherwin williams paint.. I think you can see the stage and the wall in the picture above that will tell you what it looks like.. My side Walls are "theater red" its a sherwin williams color very dark reddish.. I dont think that will matter though..

The only thing that sucks is then I have a projector and have to wait for them tobuild the screen and send it to me... I guess thats why this is called a hobby

I have a 64GB SSD for my operating hard drive and currently only have 1 2TB had drive for storage. I think my case will allow upto 4-5 more HDs until I need to expand which probably will not be my case.

That does not sound like to expensive of a setup.. Do you run XBMP on it?

Ok guys question about placement of side channel speakers.. I have motion 10 sides and if I set my seating around 11-12 feet back from screen I am not going to be able to have the sides right next to me... THX says they are supposed to be placed right at ear level or a little above and its supposed to shoot straight across you in your seats.. This is not going to be possible. Has anyone else had this problem? The sides will probably sit 1 or 2 feet in front of me do you think I can just angle them in?
Can you put them behind you?

the 2 rears will be behind me but im talking the sides

Oops.. lost track of this thread..

As far as "sparkle" it's kind of hard to describe. It would only show up on certain scenes. In my case it was something that was very white..say white clouds on a blue sky background. I guess I would describe it as being able to see the texture of the screen material and/or the reflective coating of the screen. When viewing an Epson projector on a very cheap ($120) screen at my local Frys store the sparkle was very visible in just about everything.

My setup is a JVC RS40 with an 18' throw that will project onto a 110" Carada 16:9 in a totally light controlled room. After I posted my earlier message I realized you have already painted your room.

As far as your side speakers, you're using towers which complicates things.. how about looking into some di-pole speakers? That way you can hang them on the wall in the correct place and get very good surround sound. I think you'll discover that a lot of people here follow the guidelines of side surrounds are supposed to be 2-3 feet above you and in line with you if using mono-poles and slightly behind you of using di-pole speakers.
^ Agreed. I use Triad Silver OnWall dipoles that are mounted around 2.5ft above ear level and slightly behind listening position.

I think if you use directs and in front of you they would be easily localized.

Since my sides and rears are towers and already purchased I guess I will have to build something to get them in the air.. Im going to go downstairs tonight and try to figure out how big I can go with a screen. Im still debating 16:9 and 2:35

Update.. I am going to build 1 and a half foot stands for my rears and sides to sit on .. This will make them 5 feet up in the air which should be good. My sides are not going to be as bad as I thought.. They will only be about a foot in front of my seating area if that...

For Screen size looking at Carada screens fixed frame.

I can go:

2:35 format 136 inches max

16:9 format 126 inches max

Not sure what other screen types I can go with its just what I was recommended with a new JVC model projector.

The AVR has been ordered. After weeks of pondering if I should get the Denon 4311 or the Onkyo 818 I decided to go with the 818 and save the 500 dollars. I hope I like the results. Now I can spend the 500 somewhere else in screen or projector or the million other things I need. Or if I am not satisfied and added amp to it.

Well first off u never owned a 4g phone the Internet speeds are crazy. Now I can read and post while at work. I mainly upgraded for that reason. Screens a little bigger as well. I'm not to full blown iPhone person I really only use it for the Internet . All in all depends what you use it for . I don't even use the iPod on mine but I'm really liking the iPhone 5

I have a buddy who drives for a similar company. Usually when they say things like that, it is code for "end of day, want to get home" or something cool.gifbiggrin.gifeek.gif
