I manged to cancel my order with B&H. It was still pending verification and I wanted to be sure I had it before this coming weekend. I ordered from Newegg, will receive it this week and saved some money.

Ordered mine from newegg yesterday. Would have been charged sales tax if I would have got it from amazon due to them having a warehouse in KS.

And now TigerDirect has it for $647.99 with free shipping.

This is upsetting. I can't find it for under $900 anywhere now. All the retailers that discounted below $700 have reset the price to $1199.00. I was ready to pull the trigger but it seems I was one day too late.

If I can find it for under $700 I'm in.

Have patience my friend. The price drop again is inevitable. For some reason they like to play games with this receiver, heh.

Just placed my order for the 818. Shows in stock @ 779.99 with free shipping. According to the Onkyo website, Tiger Direct is an authorized dealer.

Going to try this receiver as a replacement for an aging Sony STR-DA5000ES that doesn't have any HDMI. My new Sharp Aquos is having audio sync issues, and I figured that if I went all HDMI, that should solve the problem.

I placed my order through Tiger direct add well, but only 24 hours later and it popped back up to $1199. I wonder what drives these wild price fluctuations. Abt still has a $749 price after adding to cart, but you'll have to wait for the units to come in off of back order.

You're right...they raised the price....I checked my order on Tiger Direct, and it shows as shipped with a UPS tracking number. I'll keep my fingers crossed....

abt is up to $1200 now. I really want to buy this receiver but knowing its been discounted to under $700, I can't bear overspending for this device.

I am in the process of building a house and I was debating whether to get this or not as I am purchasing all of my HT equipment beforehand. I am going to be building a customized entertainment center and wanted all of my speakers so I could build shelves and compartments for speakers and amps and all of the goodies.
I didnt want to spend that much on a reciever but luckily, I got talked into getting the 818 when it was on sale for $679. I have not even hooked it up yet but am still go glad I purchased this reciever. I probably wont get to hear it until arouund Halloween of next year. Oh well, still glad I bought it when I did.

I bought an open box 818 mid Dec for just under $650, but the front was completely smashed. Waited two weeks and bought a new 818 for $645. Happily that receiver is in perfect shape. Give it another week or two and I'm sure you'll see sub $700 again....

So my Yamaha from Costco has to go back tomorrow. I'll need a beefier avr for the Def Tech speakers I'm getting. Until this receiver drops in price, I'm gonna be without a home theater:(.

Big brown truck delivered my 818 today. I've been able to unpack it, and fire it up. So far, so good. There was a notice in the box to update the firmware, so I just finished doing that. I used the USB method (downloaded files from web, then copied them to USB thumbdrive), and it took around 20 minutes.

I'm playing the waiting game too, and kicking myself for not jumping on one of several sellers at $679 at Xmas time. I can't believe the bungee cord pricing. Is it Onkyo or a conspiracy amongst dealers to play this game?

I remember seeing it on sale like at 8 am a few weeks back and I was trying to make my mind to pull the cord and after 12 it went back up to $1200

With a simple Google search , it shows JandR having them at $749 but of course when you click on it to take you to their site, its back to the $1199 price....argh!!

Thats how they move it in bulk in a short time, yea its a game that you need to learn to save big.. win or loose..

So when is the price likely to come back down? A July 4th sale? Next Christmas?

Best deal I see currently is an open box buy on eBay from OneCall for $820. I don't think I'm ready to pay that much. That $679 price is still too fresh.

No way to know when prices will change. I wouldn't be surprised to see Newegg drop it back to the $700 range sometime in the next month or so though (if so Amazon and others will likely follow suit). I definitely would not buy a used one for $820 from OneCall; they've been selling them new around $840 for months if you call in.

I hoping these drop in prices in the spring when new models come out. I also hope they fix the 24 fps issue.

Based on what I can see the 818 was announced Feb 13, 2012 so that would lead one to believe the replacement would be announced right after the Superbowl. And then land in stores in the month or so after. It wouldn't be much of a stretch to say prices will probably stay where they are for a week or two, have a slight reduction for SB but no great bargain. After the announcement they should drop back down to clearance prices (sub-700) just before the new units hit the shelves. The ideal situation for stores is to sell as high as they can until just before they are going to get new stock and then clearance the old ones out.

I'm thinking of getting a TX-NR1010 open box for $1200. Onkyo has all the features I want. The 616 is not enough receiver and the 717 is overpriced. Its way more then I wanted to spend, but that avr could last for years.

The 818 for $800 would be perfect. But Its at $1100 now. I want value.

OneCall has an open box buy at $820. If an 818 would be perfect for you, seems like the 1010's extra value would be wasted. I can't even justify an extra $140 for an open box unit, so I'm gonna continue to wait until the price drops again.

I agree completely. I wish I could wait for the 818 to drop in price since I feel the open box unit is overpriced. However, I am without an avr and it's driving me crazy (well, its an annoyance). Right now I'm feeling I should go with the best value since I can't get the 818 for the nice price.
