Is metal wire shelving safe to put electronics on?

I am looking for something cheap and inexpensive that I could place my receiver on and metal wire shelving units that you can by at walmart or home depot would fall into this category. I could get a plastic shelf but they seem to be flimsy and I know a metal wire self could support my receive and my ps3. One limitation is that the space where the receiver is is only about 14 inches wide. I was going to place a piece of particle board on top of the shelf so that there would be no direct connection between the receiver and metal wires of the shelf.

Unless you have defectively designed equipment, wire shelving is fine and commonly employed.

No decking is generally required. And if it is employed simply to support feet that are designed primarily to provide space for ventilation, ventilation will be restricted.

If you need vibration damping, consider small pads of Sorbothane mounted to small pieces of a rigid surface (such as 1/8"-1/4" MDF) sufficiently large just to span the wire spacing.

+1.

One thing I have done in the past is to pick up some aquarium airline or similar tubing, slice it open lengthwise, and slip on the wires of the shelves to protect the stuff resting on it. That also keeps things from rattling...
