I'm thinking seriously about getting one of these (or the PB70G).
My Panasonic AE900 is on its last legs. I was happy with its light output, and it was only rated at 1100 lumens.
Hopefully I would be happy with the LG brightness and color as well.
The reason I'm considering this projector is simple. My kids use the projector constantly. I've purchased 4 of 5 bulbs since 2007, and it's getting VERY expensive.
I'm also convinced the constant heat from the 24/7 run cycle was instrumental in making the AE900 develop the problems it has today.
Can anyone comment on the picture quality of the LG LED projectors (500 and 700 lumen) vs. the 720P Panasonic AE900U I'm replacing?
Thanks!

I hear you on the kid proofing. Specially, I went LED because I wanted something that would stand up to my 10 and 12 year old sons messing around with it. I have only had my LED projector for a few days, but it is already seeing a lot of usage with the connected HTPC: watching movies and various media, playing games, surfing the web. Soon the Xbox will amp up the usage further. I didn't want to be sitting here at work worrying about how the expensive bulb was being treated. With just myself and wife, I would have probably gone with a traditional bulb projector. I am still evaluating the LED unit, but so far it might be a keeper.

Which LED model did you buy?

Is the picture comparable to any other projectors you've seen?

Hi guys,

Can anyone tell me, perhaps nh81 as he bought it from a German site, how long the manufacturer's warranty is on the PB60G? And is the warranty European-wide or specific tO the purchase country? Just thinking if I order it from Germany and have any problems I dont really want to deal with having to post it back etc. and trying to deal with it all in German. Especially if I'm ordering it from a lesser known site like I am.
I ask because I'm from the UK and although it's available to buy here it's about 80 euros cheaper over there. The UK did say it came with a 36 month manufacturers warranty but not sure if that applies to purchases made everywhere...

I did try and contact LG UK about It but they were not very helpful regarding the cross European aspect.

Thanks in advance.

My LG PA70G comes with a 2 year warranty (I live in the US).

I don't have the paperwork with me right now.
I'll try to post the terms and conditions to this thread when I get back home.

Here is from my earlier post in the PA70G thread:

"The warranty card in the box for the PA70G states a length of 2 years parts and labor. The card also mentions the following: (User replaceable projection lamps carry a 90-day parts/labor warranty.) But since the LED light source to my knowledge is not user replaceable, I think the 2 year warranty in this situation covers the entire projector including the LED lamp."

Not sure if the PB60G will have a similar warranty.

Thanks for the info.

I managed to talk to LG Germany, they told me the PB60G comes with a 36 month manufacturer's warranty, only valid in the country of purchase though, so I'd have to post it back to Germany if there were any problems.
I ordered it from amazon.de earlier today, it was a bit more expensive than the other site I was looking at but I though it would be easier to deal with them if I have to.

Hey Durrant

Im uk based too , now that this warranty issue is explained , im going to wait until UK retailers stock this. Should really be international warranty , Currently this is stocked by 2 UK retailers , but 'typical' RIP OFF BRITIAN , they have artifically increased the price approx £70 more than EU retailers. SICK of this happening, always the same in UK when new tech hits , Uk retailers dramatically increase sales price to make more profits, just PURE GREED. LG should step in and prevent retailers selling above the Recommende Retail price. LG need to reduce this price so that it becomes more desirable for new buyers and good incentive to upgrade for owners of the LG HW/HX series...fair price for LGPB60G is £375 all inc.

Durrant ..hope you post some Vids, this projector needs alot more vids , practially nothing online. Im interested in the Pic Quality but also internal sound.

I know what you're saying, fatalfury, but I don't see the price coming down to £375 for a long time.
I've actually had the QUMI Q2 for about 6 months, and just had it returned from being repaired after I had all sorts of problems with the focus, and white pixels appearing on the projected image, as well as significant blemishes showing up on dark images. I haven't opened the replacement unit because I'm going to sell it (as opened but unused) since I believe this LG will be much better (brighter, better focus, and an actual remote with a power button and automatic sleep mode) and not a lot more expensive. I bought the QUMI for around £360, and now its selling for about £400 from reputable sellers, and certainly no less than £370 anywhere. This is what makes me think the price won't go down in the UK for this new LG anytime soon.
Projectors just aren't as popular over here as they are in continental Europe so they're always going to be that bit more expensive.

With the euro dropping the rate is pretty good versus the pound right now which is another good reason to buy it from Europe. Postage was only 6 euros and it will be here within a couple of days (perhaps tomorrow!). I get your worries about the Germany-only warranty but Amazon are a trustworthy seller and I'm happy to potentially have to pay return shipping fees in the future if it saves me 70 quid now.

You're welcome to wait but I think it'll be a long time!
FYI I paid £438 from amazon.de with the current rate
post #40 of 163
I ordered also from amazon.de on 31. July and got the paper from post office today. More than 2 weeks mad.gif... ****ing post.. im going to pick it up tomorrow.

Hey...

Jagermaster, you seriously have waited a long time, hope they refund you for delivery costs. Im still Looking forward to vids and your review of this projector. Thanks for your thoughts Durrant, im still just undecided. The warranty thing annoys the hell out of me, cannot take the risk of shipping it back and forwards to europe, sooner just wait a little for more UK retailers to stock this model, which seems to be taking forever. In meantime i hope you guys have a blast with the projector and share your thoughts with the rest of us.
Yeah sorry to hear that Jagermeister, mine arrived yesterday and I only ordered it last friday.

And I can say that Im very pleased with it. The picture is noticeably brighter than the QUMI, plus it just has a lot more features. The built-in video player is more advanced, there are far more picture/video settings, and its just 'smarter'. For example it automatically straightens up the projected image if you place it at a higher or lower than optimum height (facing the screen). Plus actually being able to remotely switch it on/off and having a sleep function is a big plus over the QUMI.

I will say that the fan is a little loud, especially on the brightest mode, but medium setting is adequate even in a lit room I think. But overall the picture quality is excellent, and the speakers aren't as bad as people are lead to believe. You can still comfortably watch a film with them and not be bothered by the fan noise.

If you have any questions let me know and I'll try and answer them.

Hey Durrant

So far , it looks like your a happy camper with the LG PB60G. Hope you can post some vids some time, theres hardly any online. As for questions, i have some basic stuff to ask. Firstly What type of plug came with the projector - 2 pin or 3 pin ? if european plug did you get a new lead or just 3 pin adaptor to work with uk sockets ?. Secondly does the menu option include the ability to do firmware upgrades ? Any heat issues ,after lengthy use periods ?

Well its not many questions for now , most have been answered in past by NH81, just if you get chance some vids would be cool.

thanks
Finally got it today. smile.gif Had not much time to play with it, but im happy with it. ( my first PJ, so cant compare with others)
Fun noise its a bit loud on brightest mode, but medium setting was good enough for me.
About heat.: on the right side of the pj where is the lens it was cold, even after 2 hours, on the left side i felt hot but not so much.
Internal sound its good compare to the size of the Pj.
Had no focus issue. Diamond shape pixels r sucks, but ok, must get used to it. With movie it dosent bothered me.
I made a quick video, unfortunately not the best quality, but when my screen will be ready, i will make a better one.

what screen size is that? thanks for the video
post #46 of 163
Hey Jagermester

Many thanks for video, its nice to see more LG PB60G clips on the net. Must admit the pic looks amazingly sharp and good. Just the sound in the video , is that the Projectors internal speakers on ? or did you have it hooked up to a external speaker system ? im just interested in knowing how clear and loud the speakers are beacuse i have small bedroom and dont want to add external speakers to the projector, just use what it comes with, hoping its enough. I know the PA70G has 3x2 watt speakers which is pretty loud, but maybe the 2x1 Watt is also enough? a video test of internal speakers would be awesome. Anyhow, thanks for video , look forward to more.
In my next video, i will test the internal speakers as well, unfortunately i forgot my usb at home and had no jack cable with me ( made the video at my gf house frown.gif ) to test it this time, but the sound its good and clear. The screen size its about 95" diagonal. Projected on the 2 meters horizontal sized window blind from about 3.1 meters.
Nh81: You can change brightness even if you use usb. Just press the "Ok" button on the remote control and you will see the "e" letter on the control playback.

After playing arround with it for a week, i experienced a little focus issue. confused.gif
The bottom of the picture more focused than the top of the picture, specially the right up corner. Not noticable with movies or games, only with internet pages..

Hi guys!

This projector has a contrast ratio of 10000:1 which is very high. The Acer K330 has 4000:1.

Did any of you compared both? I mean the difference is more than double, so is it really noticeable?

Cheers,
Martin

Unfortunetly i cant compare them. Im sure the difference is not that big. Still the contrast its good but not 10000:1 for sure.
Check the pictures, i took them with my phone, so the quality its not that woow. its on 90" screen

Nice image even comes from a phone. Looking with the captured image, pretty good contrast I think.

Pardon me....is this image from Acer K330 or LG PB60G ?

Hey, Thanks for the photos. Would be good to have them both side by side. smile.gif

Just checked on the website and it says that the contrast is 15000:1 ! Are they really sure about that!? Or is this some kind of dynamic feature...

Cheers!
Any ideas how this compares with the Vivitek Q5? Anybody had both? Based on the vids the lg looks amazing. Does anybody know if lg offers a portable battery pack like the Qumi so you dont have to plug it in?

Thanks in advance for your time

It's dynamic contrast. It's a fantastical, inflated number that has absolutely no effect on picture quality. Basically the whole picture becomes darker if there is a scene with low light like the movie credits or a fade to black when no signal is present.

The actual, native contrast of all these budget LED projectors is on average less than 2000:1

For higher contrast you would likely need more expensive optics with less light scatter, a light-blocking iris in the lens, or a different DLP chip like darkchip 3. Increasing contrast with these methods often decreases light output as well, which is already in short supply with LED projectors. Still, I'd love to see a Sharp LED projector with their iris-lens optics from the Sharp xv-z3000/Marantz vp4001.

has anyone so far plugged in a bigger hard disk (~500gb?) on usb at the pj instead of an usb stick?
Does it have the power to read/play all the files (mkv,mp4,....)?
