Take ATV3 Back And Get...?

I've had a Roku (1) HD in the Bedroom for a while now. It does Netflix great, but the Hulu Plus is sub-par; it gets hung and needs a re-boot regularly.

I decided to pick-up the $100 ATV3, in hopes of getting 3 things primarily: 1) I wanted CC from Netflix; which it does. 2) I wanted a better Hulu Plus experience, and 3) My wife is always on her iPad2 at this bedroom location, so I thought it would be cool to allow her to take advantage of AirPlay, and throw stuff up on the Plasma.

I'm pretty disappointed, to find: 1) ATV3 doesn't seem to support Hulu Plus, natively...and can't even be jail-broken (yet), and 2) the only thing my wife can seem to throw up on the Plasma, is stuff from iTunes; no games, web, Hulu Plus app, etc.

I can't see paying $100 for CCs on Netflix, when other than that...my $50 Roku (1) does Netflix better, and at least offers Hulu Plus (and more). ATV3 appears to be the most Apple-centric appliance of all; it's only good for Apple and Netflix? I think I'm going to take it back. Based on my needs, what should I get to replace it? Does Roku 2 support CC on Netflix? Did they make a design change; only the XS has an Ethernet port anymore? (I am hard-wired) (EDIT-I finally found where they hide the photos of the new Rokus...I see only the XS does have an Ethernet port)

Just out of curiosity...it would be great if this new box could play my SD .mpegs (or even HD .m2ts, but that's less important at this location). I have a PopBox in the bedroom too. Anyone found a way to crack this thing, and get it to be more of an all-in-one?

Thanks,
CD

I bought my parents a WDTV2, and it's pretty much an all around box. It plays all of my ripped content plus netflix, vudu, hulu, pandora, etc.

The Vizio Co-Star running Google TV might be another option once Vizio releases it (pre-orders are supposed to start via their site sometime this month): http://www.vizio.com/costar/overview/

Combined with Plex Media Server it should be great (or at least I'm hoping! lol)

Thanks guys. I tried most of those boxes...back in the day, lol. None of them stuck; UI and/or format issues. I'm leaning toward a new Roku XS.

Yes, Roku 2 boxes support closed captioning in the Netflix channel for those titles that have it available. I've never used it, so can't speak to its performance, or how many titles have it available.

I don't believe any other Roku boxes beside the Roku 2's are capable of CC, though. The Roku LT runs the same firmware as the Roku 2's, but not sure if CC is enabled on that one. I have one at home, but never really payed attention since it's not something I ever use. I can check if you're interested.

All of the current "puck" Roku's are Roku 2, and can play subs on Netflix. Other than added features like bluetooth, USB and Ethernet, the Roku boxes are the same hardware, though resolution is limited to 720p on the cheaper models. If you'd like to stream local content, Plex is a seamless, spouse friendly option. It presents your local content on the roku with the same interface as Netflix. If you have a Roku 1, you can use Plex right now.

Oh yeah? Sounds promising. Can you point to a good link, for config?

I tried Roksbox back in the day; even though I'm pretty proficient at streaming, couldn't ever get it sorted out. Maybe I'll have better luck with Plex.
