Virtual Shadow Copy service fails

I tried to back up the Win 7 boot drive on my htpc and received an 'unable to create volume snapshot' message. I can see in the system log that vss has failed. I am unable to list writers or shadows or delete shadows using vssadmin. I have tried chckdsk c: /f and restarting the necessary services after deleting a registry key as I've read in some online help and KB's. Thought I could get around the problem with using Macrium, but I get the same message since it uses vss. I'm sweating bullets that I could have a drive failure before I get this resolved and lose my ability to watch recorded TV!! :-( Any ideas?

Is the VSS service running?

If it isn't, how do you force it to run?

Type Services in the start menu. You can then stop/start and set to auto or manual.
