Hotspot from the beta is cool too. Tried a little combat mission too. So far the maps don''t have a lot of long sight lines for sniping and dropping tons of streaks on but they have tons of cover.
If you checked out the beta the gameplay is about the same. Graphically I'm torn, it looks good but some maps just seem odd. I read for BF3 that the neon colors were used on purpose so maybe the expanded color pallette is making it odd. Menu system was improved but it's still strange. They put more explanations for the various pieces which helps out. Went with the default control scheme and after the initial shock of getting used to it, I am finally not trying to axe people as much when going prone.
Blackhawks get taken out almost immediately or at least the gunner, but that was on one game. Might have been a good squad.
Overall it's a solid experience. I'll bet it gets about an 8 or 8.5 from the critics, probably similar to what BF3 got but maybe a little less.

Probably won't be a very big platoon Nexus smile.gif. Anyway, I have to get ready for an 8 day West Coast business trip tonight, so I probably won't be on until a bit later. The game should be on my porch when I get there hopefully. Taking my xbox with me too so I may be playing some while I travel.

May not be much of a platoon but I can play army of one!

Figured out that if you go to the Stats & Leaderboards section of the main menu and select Service Record you can see your upcoming unlocks. Looks like it's a mix, weapons and soldiers by points and equipment by use of the weapons.
You can tell by the reviews it is amazing. Oops.
Reviews are worthless nowadays.

I played MP for a bit last night with Nexus and a few others and while I hated it at first, the gameplay quickly grew on me. It's like an extension of BF close quarters maps to an outside environment, not as fatiguing or fast paced, but still plenty of action where you aren't running around for a while between flags like normal BF maps. Gunplay took a few games to get the feel for - I'd say it's similar to BF, but with a lot more recoil. Classes seemed balanced and none of the point streaks came off as overpowering. Key is definitely to stick with your fireteam buddy as it will help keep you alive and reloaded.

I'll say the menu's suck, the maps are bland, the soldier/weapon unlocks are confusing as @#$%, but it was fun. It's probably not going to win any games of the year, or even snatch an 8 from a review site, but it's entertaining enough for me to play with friends. Will I be playing this a month from now - probably not. But, I'll get more of my money's worth out of this than I did the multi-billion selling 9.0 review receiving MW3.

For those looking to tank this game your reviews are up. Looking to get a 5/10 from eurogamer and a few bloggers. Rubber stamp MW3 gets a 9.5 and it was a mess of mixmatched ideas but a solid game gets tanked cause its not the popular kid. So it goes.

There are some things that drag this one down from a 10 but not that far. The little girl in the campaign looks like an orc child from LOTR. Whoever drew her needs to learn some things about humans and their shape. Story is a bit disjointed so far but should all come together. Nothing groundbreaking but not complete garbage.

Menus are a bit weird no question there but once you figure them out its all good. Why they didn't copy BF system I dont understand. Guess they wanted separation. Graphics are great in places and meh in others. Strange because I didn't feel that way in BF.

Multi is fun plain and simple. All the game modes and maps go together. Maps overall may not be the best but they fit the game modes their made for. Only ran into one spawn rape which we were attackers on. I suspect it was a crappy team because there are a lot of flanking routes. I could maybe see a 7/7.5 but getting down into the 5 range is just being an ahole.

So long as it sells well and the servers stay busy for awhile I'm happy. I see myself playing this for a long time.

Early reviews are brutal on this. Too bad, I thought the sp on the first one was really underrated.
The eurogamer review reads more like a 7 than a 5 though. I dunno if they just use a different scale or what, a 5 usually means a horrible game.

Sorry, Destructoid had the scathing review with a 5, thought euro gave it a 5 but didn't read their article. The Destructoid article reads like the guy was bent cuz he found his wife with an EA employee.
Eurogamer did give it a 5. Basically, this quote sums it up:
Quote:
This is a genre where exceptional levels of polish are required just to keep pace, and any new entry must not only meet high expectations, but attempt to exceed them. Warfighter borrows ideas from COD and Battlefield and offers a few of its own, but it falls far short of the standards set elsewhere. This is a field where "pretty good" is no longer good enough.

Even if I agree with the sentiment...."pretty good" shouldnt mean a 5.

That statement is legitimate but their rating is a joke. Crappier titles had better ratings. The Destructoid guy got called out as a hypocrite for giving MW3 such a high rating and ranking this one so low but he just played it off. If I was into conspiracies I'd say some marketing dollars were or were not applied to the correct greased palms.

The IGN review is the one I'm curious to see. They generally express logic and fairness.

So far I haven't ran into anything game breaking at all. Maybe some tearing or minor things but its not broken by any stretch. Day one patch, so what, BF did the same thing. In fact its pretty normal, Borderlands 2 had one I think as well. That's actually good that the developer listened and fixed things. Darkest of Days deserved the rating it got. This one seems like its being tanked on purpose.

IDK, lack of polish nets a 7 at least. Sheer hatred for something lands the 5, complete incompetence gets the 2s. So getting a 5 to me means Danger Close pissed someone off or the powers that be want this one to suffer and die quietly. The other side of the conspiracy coin is that another company with a big name release a month away paid for this to be squashed so it doesn't overshadow their release. Good thing I dont buy into conspiracies.
I dunno if I buy into a conspiracy here. There's a lot working against it before they even saw the game. The last one wasnt great, so that's the baseline. They weren't sent advance copies, and that sets off alarms. The genre is admittedly really tired. A lot of otherwise competent military shooters got tanked this year for being generic - spec ops, ghost recon. But a 5 (now from multiple sites) really does seem way too harsh.

Destructoid isn't exactly known for its maturity, and he even went as far as to apologize for making it a poster child at one point. I'm generally not a huge fan of IGN either. But EG is usually pretty good. Most sites did give BF3 a total pass on 2/3rds of the game (SP,Coop), and ignored how unfinished it was at launch. But MoH isn't getting the same leeway cause nothing about it is really impressive.

I guess look at the silver lining, maybe getting savaged by the critics will light a fire under their ass to make sure they don't phone it in next time?

Ghost Recon had a few single player issues that were actual game breakers to an extent and Spec Ops had a very flat multiplayer experience. But both earned 8s from Eurogamer and Destructoid. I'm not a conspiracy believer at all so please don't think I'm peddling that dribble. It just seems odd that things are playing out this way.
Regardless of agendas and reviews, the MP is still fun and I didn't see any bugs in my limited time last night. The FT concept is a fresh new idea, no denying that. I actually think the hit detection was improved over the Beta as it didn't take as long to kill guys.

Nah man, I'm with you. 5 is way out of line.

Anyway, I've got the PS plus 1 hour trial. Should I use it on SP or MP? Basically Im asking, will the final MP change my mind about the beta, or will the first hour of SP intrigue me?

Not upset over the reviews just a little taken back. Roger on the 2010 distaste. Played a little the other night and heard sniper shots pinging off my head in my sleep. But got my guy up to level 8 and got that cheevo. So it's done now that the new one is here.

I'm still on the fence for the SP. I mean it's ok, but the story doesn't really grab you like Spec Ops did, bad example that was stellar. The BF3 SP was kind of cool and I was into the Ghost Recon SP, but this just hasn't produced yet. The 2010 release was a slow start too but once I got into I loved it. Lots of shooting and explosions so far, some stuff about his wife and orc child but not really much developed yet. Since everyone says its short I may finish tonight.

MP is a blast. Now some caveats, don't go in thinking it's BF3 or COD, you won't like it. Look at it like a fresh IP and have an open mind. Just trying to say it doesn't compare to those as much as people like to portray. The menus are weird at first and there is a lot going on. BF controller setup may help get around the changes in control. An hour may or may not sway your dollars, especially if your planning on other releases in another few weeks.

PS If you don't buy it Google up what the daughter looks like. You'll probably have the same WTF was that reaction I did. biggrin.gif
post #136 of 178
So I burned the hour on SP. I'm totally understanding the disbelief now...cause it seemed pretty damn cool to me. I suppose it is rather generic, but it has a great feel to it, graphics are pretty good, sound quality is top notch. It's ridiculous this is getting 5s, unless the game completely falls apart at minute 61.

I won't lie, I really want to keep playing, but I just can't justify $60 for it, for only two weeks of play. I'm definitely going to pick it up when the price drops. It made a really good first impression on me, unlike ghost recon or spec ops.

And lol yeah, that daughter looks ridiculous, although I'd classify it under troll. tongue.gif

This game is pretty sweet overall.

Had a good group on last night and our platoon is close to 10 people. Picked up a Ghost Recon friend and one of his buddies. So were looking good to put a whole team in play. Figured out the platoon leader and how to dole out the ability for other ls to run the platoon too. Razor and Hoosier I know I gave that to but probably Revel and Harp as well. It was late and I was tired...

Soldiers seem to unlock very quickly which just keeps pounding you with new info all the time. I've gotten to just ignoring it. Ooh got an AA-12 unlocked last night tongue.gif and its every bit as sweet as I thought. Being a shotty, range becomes an issue and ideal confrontation range is slightly further than it goes but it has a nice sound and feel.

Hopefully I can get on tonight when I get Cali. Although I will be on later than normal since I'm on the West Coast for the next week

I decided to go check out some reviews and have to laugh at them. A lot of reviewers are knocking it for "not bringing anything new to shooters". I am not trying to start a war, but these are the same people that are giving CoD 9 or 10's. Call of duty hasn't changed anything, it is the same stuff every year, even in the campaign. A few explosions, a vehicle sequence or two, yet they don't get knocked down to a 5 for doing the same old thing. Seems a little fishy to me.

My favorite was the Destructoid one saying the word Warfighter was bro-ish and stupid but never said that about GRAW.

Yeah, that is pretty dumb. I stopped giving reviewers any attention a long time ago, because all it is is an opinion. Sure, if a game is getting horrible marks every where, then I might rethink it, but Dishonored is getting rave reviews and I hated the game, so I don't care what a reviewer thinks. Now my main problem with this game is I wonder how active the online will be in a couple weeks. I know for a fact that none of my close friends are picking it up, so I would have to play with random people and that is never fun.

It all depends on the randoms. I started Ghost Recon with just a couple AVSrs that didn't play long and ended up hooking up with a bunch of other random people, some of whom are transitioning to this. Now, GR seems to have a lot more mature audience like MOH most likely will as well. So that helps a lot too.

We have a growing group playing it and I for one plan on getting my $s worth. So if you get it can always join us. I personally have no real interest in much of what is coming out in the near future other than tossing it on Gamefly and seeing it when it comes. MOH is my new bread and butter like BF was for so long. About the time Aftermath drops for BF Ill be ready for a MOH break but will mix the two up depending on whose playing what.

Reviews I dont care so much about overall but really bad ones do influence sales which reduces long term play. So its in my interest to see it sell well to have targets in 6 months. One concern I do have is DLC. There has been no mention of any I've seen.

Zero Dark 30, 2 more maps.

Ok, I will take a look at the online. The only crappy thing is I got it from gamefly, so I will have to either buy it or pay $10 to check out the online, so that kind of sucks. If I do play online, I will let you know and maybe I can add you on my friend list. I don't play as much as I used to with kids in school and all that stuff, but I would like to have some team mates to roll it with.

Cool. Some people were getting Limited Editions from Walmart and possibly Gamestop. If your going to buy it, get the LE. It gets you the maps Hoosier just mentioned and BF4 beta access if your inclined. The GF version gets none of that which prompted me to change my preorder.

Just read there is a way to set up custom quick matches

Free maps with limited edition? Good to hear.

Aside from some spawn trapping issues on one of the SC maps, I think the MP is pretty solid. I really dig that Home Run mode.

Haven't tried that and have only played minimal hot spot thus far.

I still think that spawn trap was cuz they sucked. We played that same map and area on hotspot last night and got owned in it. The maps do slightly change routes from mode to mode so maybe that's a bad example.
