Bi-amp AVR-1913 with 4 ohm front speakers

Methinks this might be a foolish question but, then again, I've never been accused of being that wise:

I'm using the above receiver in a 5.1 setting. My front speakers are 4 ohm PSB Stratus Gold i's. They are bi-ampable. Works great so far except that when playing music (stereo) at higher levels (-5.0 db) for a moderate length of time, the amp will shutdown due to heat.

Lots of space surrounds the receiver. I'm not playing nearly as loud as my previous receiver (Pioneer VSX-1016) which was also not rated for 4 ohm loads.

My question is this: if I bi-amp zone 2 to my speakers, do you think the use of the currently unused amp section will allow me to drive my 4 ohm speakers to high levels with less heat related shutdown?

Thanks,
G.

No.

Unfortunately you have the wrong choice of receiver with your 4Ω speakers. If you need to play at those levels you need to upgrade to a more powerful receiver rated for 4Ω, or a receiver with pre-outs to use with ext. power amps.

When there's Klipsch, why would anybody who wants loud, want 4 ohm speakers which robs amplifier and speaker efficiency?

(And FWIW, yes, I've bi-amped my Klipsch with tubes and SS to mellow the horns when playing violins.)

With all due respect, I'd buy a new set of speakers before dealing with 4 ohm speakers. The point, why are you not considering purchasing a new set of speakers as opposed to re-amping the speaker system? confused.gif

As Kilian.ca notes, you need a more powerful amp to power those puppies. An AVR that would be more line with those high quality speakers would be the Denon 4311CI which not only can power 4-ohm speakers, but also uses the far more advanced version of Audyssey MultEQ XT32 which will make them sing even better. Give either Electronics Expo or AV Science sales a "call" for their best price. smile.gif
