splitting hdmi signal sound and video over "Y" splitter?

Thread Starter
My amplifier a HK avr320 I am fond of.
has hdmi 1.1 not 1.3 or something.
Same is true of a nice onkyo I have.
therefore the audio inputted through hdmi from a given device is AOK, but cannot also get a good video signal to my HD projector.
I can do one or the other, sound over hdmi, which indeed sounds better than over other digital sources to me, or video to the projector.
I have a splitter that routes to different hdmi outputs that is powered, but I guess I am wondering if the opposite works or if their exists a simple solution:
I have seen cheap simple hdmi male to 2 hdmi female Y splitters.
They are so cheap I might as well just try one, right.
Will this work, if so it could save many of us "upgrading" AVR amps or HTPC's routed through our amps.
I have seen the "pin outs" for the different hdmis should be possible, perhaps a custom cable would be the ticket: ouch $$ or a crazy specialized splitter box $$$$$
Will post a related post about Dells in my opinion silly displayport: does it also carry audio?
Does it still carry audio when passed through a hdmi adapter like i am going to try to do using my dell latitude e6500 to stream video and audio in the aforementioned scenario.
Peace

So, if you hook the HDMI cable from your HTPC directly to the projector... does it work well for video?

And if you hook the HDMI out from your AVR to the projector it doesn't work well for video?

Those cheap "Y" splitters for HDMI don't work as you think they do. The HDCP protection will probably keep those from working as people intend. Plus a passive splitter will effectively halve the signal to both the AVR and projector... your video signal might not be strong enough to run the projector. You would need an active HDMI switch.

Since HDMI is a handshaking protocol a simple Y splitter will only output to one device at a time and is only useful to save reconnecting cables when required.
Can you connect directly to either HDMI destination with the other destination not connected?
Does your PJ support HDCP over HDMI?
What resolution video are you trying to send to what make/model of PJ.

Try THIS ONE from Monoprice.

I've been using one for a few years with one split going 35'. Has worked flawlessly with a PC, Dish, Comcast and DirecTV. No handshake problems at all.
