I definitely want to at least take a sweep of each sub with the same mic position, and possibly increasing sweep levels until compression, measurements at multiple locations in the room and spec lab captures. I am willing to take and organize the measurements.

That is awesome regarding the F2 - can't wait to hear and see it.

As for the format - I'm open to opinions, but would prefer to keep it informal to keep the 'fun' in the event. I will definitely hit up Jonathan (Archaea) for some ideas on music clips as well as for some advise in general for the meet. Thoughts?

I now have a new Denon 4311ci which as you know has XT32 capability. I also have a miniDSP if we choose to use that. With the amount of subs that will likely be attending, my vote would be to just run Audyssey and take sweeps with the Omnimic disc. The sweeps are definitely useful for those who cannot attend so a somewhat fair subjective comparison could be made. Thanks for volunteering for the data capturing. smile.gif I'm an Audyssey newb as well so could probably use some tips setting that up.

Running Audyssey each time means the speakers and the subwoofers will sound different each time you calibrate. I'd suggest not using Audyssey at all or try running it with the sub set to "no/none" and you can test to see if it will leave the subs alone and just correct the speakers. I've heard some say this approach won't work, and others who've done it and say it does. It's very easy to find out either way with a measurement setup.

Hey guys,

I have silently followed the previous GTG thread as well as this one... I would love to hear the subs on the list that I haven't heard yet (Most of them) I'm up in Boston so it's a little bit of a hike for me to get there. I will also be car-less by September, so perhaps I can hitch a ride or rent a car to attend. However- I will have brand spanking new Arx A5 towers (http://www.avsforum.com/t/1421120/new-arx-a5-towers / http://www.theaudioinsider.com/product_info.php?p=arx-a5-floorstanding-loudspeaker&products_id=216&) in a couple weeks so if I can make it, I'd be happy to bring them if anybody is interested to hear them. (While taking a break from hearing all the subs)

Also contingent of course, on if Andrew has the space to set these up somewhere for some informal listening... I could bring a receiver if Andrew doesn't have an extra one lying around. I also have a HP SubM but since others have already volunteered to bring theirs I won't lug mine down there.

Mark - thanks for the tip. Like I said, I'm an audyssey newb and appreciate the advice. I do have an omnimic so we could run a few before/after sweeps or just forgo it altogether.

I might be convinced to bring my HP SubM. Anybody else going to this GTG from Boston? It would save me some money to just pitch in for gas money rather than have to rent a car for the day...

I agree with gtpsuper24's description of them: "Looks like it might be one of the best bang for the buck tower speakers out there. A 3 way tower using planar ribbons, light curvilinear doped cellulose cone with alloy phase plug and cast alloy basket, and 3 XBL2/ Splitgap long throw woofers."


I've been in a pre-release Group Buy for these since October and can't wait for these to finally be in my living room!! Anyways, if any of you are interested in seeing/hearing them at the GTG, speak up- otherwise I may end up just leaving them set up in my living room home theater...

I'd think you should be able to find at least a few people from your area with interest in coming down. I also wouldn't mind hearing those speakers and we could even compare them against my Polk monitor 70s. But you shouldn't bring them just on my interest alone - would anyone else be interested in these? They can be set up in my living room with a Yamaha receiver and acurus amp.

As for the submersive - absolutely bring it if you can. biggrin.gif

Just picked up my submersive F2 this weekend. If I can get both the F2 and HP box in my car, both will be coming with me to the GTG. Or if people would prefer, I might be able to bring the HP and a pair of Catalyst 8Cs.

For the format, I agree with Mark about not running Audyssey. I would rather just use the minidsp to EQ the subs. I've never used the minidsp, but with REW or Omnimic, it should be relatively easy to EQ the subs to relatively flat and verify the interaction with the main speakers. Also, I think it would be good to select a few movie scenes and musical selections that we would listen to at the same level for each sub. Then after that, open it up for whatever people want to hear at whatever playback level.

If I had to choose a single movie clip, it would be Master and Commander, LOTR:FOTR or Tron. For music, it would be a drum and bell demo track that Mark played at a previous GTG in PA, but I don't know the title.

OK - sounds like the consensus / best practice is to leave audyssey out of the picture. I'll have to make up some connectors with RCA for the minidsp as I'm sure not everyone will want to use XLR inputs. smile.gif I also have my XLR to RCA cable which works fine as well. The interface is rather simple to use - it allows for ~6 filters per channel, plus distance/phase/crossover changes if you so desire. I could probably throw up some screenshots to share to give you guys an idea. I'm by no means an EQ/room correction expert, but the minidsp is pretty easy to use.

The movie clips you mentioned are part of the BluRay demo disc I have. I'm also opened to any music clip suggestions - I'd imagine whatever we chose should be consistent across all the subs we demo. I don't have an extensive music collection outside of compressed mp3s, so if anyone who does could help out with a 'demo disc' or something similar that would be great. biggrin.gif

Johnny Lang's Lie To Me is a good test CD, especially for kick drum. I can bring that one.

Mark are you coming?? I would love to hear a pair of your Catalyst. I know it is a sub GTG, but I am sure I am not alone!! I am having the itch to upgrade again. I may just change my screen name to Upgrad'en!!

I've been to your house (and loved it) -- but as far as auditiong the gear this time round - - - I own the caps, one of my local friends on avsforum owns a pair of HSU VTF-15Hs and another of my local friends on avsforum owns a pair of submersives. I've heard the Rythmik before. That's giving me one set of new subs to hear. The Dual XV15's. What else is on the list? biggrin.gifredface.gif

Update to the basement room: projector, screen, receiver, and speakers are up and running! WOW, the screen is huge compared to my 65" dlp, haha.
