Simple question - Why will my powered sub only work once a level of volume is reached?

Hey everyone, first time poster here smile.gif

I'm getting ready to upgrade my A/V equipment but first I have a simple question that's been eating at me for a while.

I've got an older powered sub and older receiver. Regardless of where the source of audio is coming from the sub will NOT work unless I turn up the receiver volume to a certain point. I only have to turn up the volume a little (it's still quiet) however there are times where I like my speakers VERY low and the sub simply will not "react". I'm sure its a basic setting, frequency cutoff, etc.

Thanks fellas!

Does your sub have an "auto on" mode that it's set to? It sounds like that might be the case, and it just happens that the sub requires a certain (slightly higher) level of signal to cause it to switch on.

If that is the case, you could either leave your sub on all the time or set up a trigger to power it on whever you turn on your AVR.

Interesting - the sub is already on 100% of the time, so perhaps it's auto powering off? I'll have to get the model # of this thing.

If the power switch is set to "on" instead of "auto", the sub should never power off. Weird...

If you can, try turning down the volume knob on your subwoofer (which won't affect the auto-on threshold) and turning up the gain of the subwoofer channel in your receiver.

If you have a receiver which includes Audyssey room equalization, this can be done while calibrating.

Edited to add:
The power-on/auto-on switch might be defective or dirty. Try switching it back and forth several times to clean the contacts and make sure it's all the way to on.
