Will the current slim PS3s be good for playing back BD movies or will a standalone be better?

I am contemplating whether to get a refund for my $138 BD player and just get a $250 PS3 for brand new. Obviously the advantage is playing games, and I have about 5 I have in mind that I really want to play.

However, someone told me that the laser for the PS3 isn't that good, and that if you were to use it solely for watching movies it won't last as long as say a standalone BD player priced between $100 and $200. is there any truth to this?

As for noise and heat issues, will the PS3 be louder when watching movies or will it be pretty quiet like a decent BD player (like my Panasonic)?

Thanks! smile.gif

PQ will be the same with stand-alone BD players and the PS3. IMO, upscaling SD DVDs will be better with many stand-alone players, and yes, stand-alone players will generally be quieter and generate less heat. Both should last as long and be equally reliable.

OP: Please take a moment to use the search engine. We have master/owner's threads set up for most BR players. If you have a question specific to a player...please use the owner's thread to ask and do your research. If you are seeking help or advice on which player would be best for you...please use the "help me find a BR player:" sticky.
