Suggestions for replacing Sony SA-WMP1 Subwoofer?

Thread Starter
Something like 10 years ago, I bought a Sony HT-DDW830 Home Theater System, which included five SS-MSP1 speakers, a SA-WMP1 Subwoofer, and STR-K502P receiver. After a decade and three or four moves, all I have left are the five speakers and a rear-projection TV with terrible audio. So, I am looking for a low-cost solution in the form of a used subwoofer and receiver, only I have NO IDEA what I am doing, and I don't want to blow up my speakers. Any help? I've included a bunch of information below. What is it that I need to know to make sure that the sub/receiver will be compatible with my current speakers?

I don't care about the radio tuners or tweaking specific components, I'm just looking for a bare-bones system that works with the speakers that I've got and won't sound like crap. Thanks in advance!

According to the manual, the speakers are 8-ohm units and the sub is self-powered. IMO, the cheapest route that will still offer some decent sound is a gently-used 5.1 receiver with optical/coaxial digital audio inputs (but possibly without HDMI inputs or outputs). You're looking at ~$50-$100.
