How Many Lumens does a Theater Projector Pump Out While in 3D???

I feel this question should settle the debate on where we all should expect our Projectors to perform at. I just purchased the Sony HW30 off of AVS ( receiving today smile.gif ), and from what I seen many say that the Sony HW30 is most like the theater experience as far as lumens are concerned (Perfect in 2D and very watchable in 3D).


Sooo, I would love to know how many Lumens are we seeing while watching a movie in the theater with our 3D glasses on??? If you don't know, I would still love to hear a guess, as this question in itself, if it has an answer, should take care of how we all perceive the 3D home experience and what projector best suits our needs.


Basically any Projector on the market that is at or comes close to the theater experience in Lumens (in 3D mode) should never be in question as far as brightness is concerned.

Typically you're going to only get up to 30% of brightness through the 3D glasses. So take that into consideration when looking at the lumen results. Usually Art will comment on the brightness behind the glasses. If it's not on that page it will probably be somewhere else in the review.

5 or 6 Foot Lamberts. Some even as low as 4 Foot Lamberts. Of course this will increase some as more and more films are shot in 3D.

Just to clarify, your question is not answerable in lumens, you are really asking what are the foot lamberts (the illumination per sq ft of screen) that you would see in a commercial 3D theater vs your home theater. That of cpurse depends on a variety of factors, namely the size of both screens, the gain of both screens, the particulary 3D delivery system, the number of lumens the projector puts out yada yada. Most commercial 3D theaters deliver about 2 to 4 ft lamberts and most home theaters deliver more than that. The answer once again is how big your screen is, what gain, your projector, its bulb age, the throw distance, yada yada. Hope this helps. I will chime in as well. The lumens in 3D typically INCREASES. Projectors and displays typically boost various settings in order to push out more light. You can see this by simply taking your projector in 2D, putting in a movie, and then WITHOUT glasses put it into 3D. It will be brighter.

But, that is not the issue. As Mark said, it is a matter of what actually makes it to your eye, which is a function of the glasses ultimately. And as Mark said, and it is a generalization since different glasses can vary, about 30% of the light coming towards your eyes will actually make it through.

But to your main question on what to expect...no one can really answer. Each person has different ideas of what is good. Old CRT guys can attest that they were used to, and happy with 3-4 footlamberts at that time. It is very subjective.
