7875:1 but with less lumens
According to Cine4Home the Sony 1000 contrast ratio is reported:
"The native contrast ratio amounts, as with the previous series, depending on the zoom and iris settings (it can also be operated static), (on iris, zoom, max) between 8,000:1 and 18,000:1 (iris, zoom min) . "

From the above video the similar 50ES calibrated, measured contrast is 6800:1 (at 11:53 minutes) @1400 lumens.

Their 30ES measure 3200 to 5000.

The native contrast appears to have improved over the 30ES.

Also looks like dynamic contrast is 45 000:1 calibrated.

There's no specific date yet here in US, it's likely a similar time, a few weeks away. AVS is checking with Sony this week to find out the ETA.

a current discussion on the lens and theories on how they improved sharpness over the HW30. Current information states they are sharing the same lens that caught some flack last year. The topics include possible optimization of the optical path. The other possibility could be the reality creation software causing a perception of increased sharpness, similar to the Darbee effect.

My specific RS55 has an excellent lens. The focus is dead on for the entire screen and pixels in the farthest corners of the 142" screen are clear and well definied. Having owned the HW30 for a year, I'm curious to see how these improvements were made (hardware / software or both ).

One of the popular topics this year will be RC vs. E-shift vs. Darbee, etc. Good camera techniques will be able to give a basic idea of what's going on between these various methods of attempting to increase overall PQ.

The sony style website is saying estimated shipping is 10/1
post #38 of 302
I saw that too but my understanding is that it's not accurate. We'll find out for certain next week.

Looking at the pictures on te Sony web site, there is no 12v trigger for the projector, just an RS232 input.

Has it been confirmed that the DI will not be active in 3D?

I'm on pre-order and I have a couple random questions:

1. My first/current projector is a venerable mitsubishi hc5000 and the lens is on the right side of the projector. So unless I move the ceiling mount the sony will be ~4 inches off center from the screen. I'm assuming horizontal lens shift will deal with this or should I move it?

2. Will my universal spider mount work with this or is there something special about the bottom of a sony?

3. Any recommended 3rd party glasses that will work with Sony projectors or should I buy more sonys? Two are not going to be enough and I'm assuming the samsung led glasses I have won't work with it.

thanks!

To answer your questions:

1: This Sony does have horizontal lens shift. I'd personally avoid using it, especially if you need to use the vertical lens shift a bunch as well. You want to keep the light coming through the lens as close to the center sweet spot as possible. You'll get the sharpest picture from corner to corner this way. If you have the means to move the mount, move it.

2: Yes, it should work fine. I have a universal mount from Peerless and it has worked with over a dozen different projectors over the past year. The only thing you might need to change are the screws/bolts that will go into the projector. They will most likely be a different size. Check the Sony's manual. I don't know if one has been posted on Sony's site. If its not check the HW30's as it has virtually the same chassis and will almost certainly take the same screw size to mount.

3: I would check out XPand. They make cheap high quality universal glasses for both IR and RF emitters.

Thanks for the quick reply Seegs108. I think it should not be too hard to move the mount and patch the old spot so I'll probably give it a shot. I'll check out the glasses too.

I preordered from Sony site. Today my order updated on the site and say "Ready to Ship", estimate ship date 10/02/2012. Let hope this is accurate!
Any updates from avs team on ship dates?
Sony site for my order says Ready to Ship for 10/2. I had to call them about something else so I asked them what that status means and they confirmed it will ship today.

Thanks for the update. I was about to call them about my order. Really looking forward to this new projector. I'm replacing my old VPL-HW10.

I just called the Sony's store since the store shows it as out of stock. The salesman told me that they have not received any HW50ES projectors. I am hearing a date of availability of the 17th.

This reminds of when they were ready to ship the HMZ 3D Headsets, the Sony site said they were ready to ship, but it was delayed for weeks. Only when it says 'processed' and they email a tracking # would I be getting excited.

The 17th is close enough.. cool.gif

Yes, very excited. This is my 4th projector. Started with a Sony CRT back in the day, then moved on to a Runco in 2003, then the Sony VPL-HW10, now on to the HW50ES. Looking forward to seeing how the 3D looks on a big (110") screen.

Mine was shipped yesterday too, but it must be coming by Fedex-Pedestrian because it's not due to be delivered until next Tues :-(.

This quote from Art's review of the 50ES has me interested in the 50ES:
"I spent over an hour playing with Reality Creation, and Epson's Super-Resolution, side by side (HW50ES an HC5010). No question, even on the low default of 20, the Sony makes everything look sharper than the Epson even with its Super-Resolution up at maximum of 5."

I have the Super-Resolution of my 5010 set at 4, and my Darblet (in HD mode) set at 60, when viewing HDTV shows via Comcast, on my 159" HP screen at 11'-4".

An even sharper image (which Art claims the Sony has), has me thinking about upgrading this winter - even though I know that I'll want to upgrade again to 4K in a year or two.

I want images in my HT to look like 'real life'. I don't give a rat's a** about maintaining the director's intent.

In this forum, this makes me a J6P.....right???

I m thinking about 'upgrading' my JVC RS45 to the Sony HW50 which is just around the corner. Only thing I m worried about is black level. I m a real black level entheusiast and I don t want to loose this on a new projector. Will this become a problem for me when switching from my RS45 to the HW50 you guys think? My HT room is a total bat cave. Also, when looking at the review of Projector Reviews I did notice some things that Art stated that I do not agree with (and I think more users here will too). He says the black levels of the last years Epson topmodel are better then the JVCs. Well, thats not true at all. The JVC is a state-of-the-art black level projector. Also, he compared some screenshots and says the HW50 is better in blakcs then the HW30. Well, maybe it s me but when you look at the screenshots he made the HW30 is by far the better one in black level:

HW50: http://www.projectorreviews.com/images-projectors-q3-12/vpl-hw50es_5thelement_starship_over_large.jpg
HW30: http://www.projectorreviews.com/images-projectors-q3-11/vpl-hw30es_5th_element_starship4_large.jpg

I've had the 30 and JVC 45. Unless there are night and day changes between the 30 and 50, you probably will regret your decision.
To me watching these two projectors (30 and 45) are not even close. I know a lot of people here compare these two projectors but have never figured out why.
Unless youre looking for a upgrade in 3d..best to stay put. 6800 vs 20,000 native equals no contest.

I guess people compare hw30 and rs45 because of 3D.
Not a secret, that JVC has best black level and worst ghosting, though I never owned it.
sanderdvd, If your budget allows, I advise keep rs45 for 2d, and buy hw50 for 3d. If you will be satisfied with hw50's black level, you always can sell rs45.
