Optoma GT750 Vs Optoma HD20

New to the community here - it's been a huge resource in helping me but of course I still have a few questions.

I have looked into a ton of different projectors - From what I have been reading the Viewsonnic Pro8200 and Optoma HD23 may be a good fit for me but I believe I have narrowed it down to the Optoma GT750 and Optoma HD20.

What I want in a projector:
1080p: for Blu-Ray movies, HD gaming on Xbox 360 and PS3, and Direct TV HD DVR (watching sports)
Under $1000

I have zero worry about ambient light. My projector will be going in my basement where there are no windows or outside light.
My basement is fairly small and the projection would be between 100-140inches.
I'm hoping to get the best picture for HD movies, gaming and TV (isn't that what we all want) and staying under $1000.

From what I have gathered the past few days it sounds like the Optoma GT750 and Optoma HD20 may be the best fits for me. Both seem to do well in fairly small rooms, have lots of positive reviews regarding picture quality and contrast ratio. From what I understand the GT750 is only 720p so it sounds like playing a blu-ray movie on my PS3 wont project a true 1080p image?

Any input on choosing between these two would be great!
If there is another projector that meet my HD needs and is under $1000 then please let me know! There may be a model the superior above these two options that I havent looked into yet.

That is correct, it will accept a 1080P input signal but will convert it to fit on the native resolution of 1280x720 . But the GT750 is the only projector you have listed that is capable of doing 3D via HDMI 1.4a like your PS3 for example.

Great! Thanks for confirming. With that said I definitely want a true 1080p projection (that is if there is a decent difference between 1080p and 720p) Actually, is there a noticable difference? If not the maybe I should save myself the time of searching for a 1080p projector and just stick with the GT750.

True! The 3D is great I'm sure but I'm actually not that interested in 3D. I have just been going back and forth between the GT750 and Optoma HD20 in terms of which is going to give me the better 2D image. Help!

One thing I didn't mention is that I have used a GT750 before. So I am interested in knowing if buying a Optoma HD20 or HD23 would be a noticeable upgrade or if I'm pretty much going to see not difference in picture quality/performance. Can someone give me a comparison between these?

I haven't viewed both so can not rightly say. The larger the image the more one will notice the difference from 1080P and 720P . Going from a Mits HD1000 (720P) to my current H9500BD (1080) I felt the image was sharper on a larger screen currently running a100", with the HD1000 I was at 80".

Suggest reading the HD20 thread and the ViewSonic Pro8200 both being 1080P DLP projectors under $1k. I am thinking the Pro8200 may have a better picture but not sure.

Yeah, I too would at least look at the pro8200.
I mean , 1 year warranty vs 3 year warranty. Next year a month from then if something went wrong on your optoma you would be out of luck and they are very expensive to fix, almost as much as buying a new PJ.
I don't have to worry until 2015, you would have to worry with the optoma in 2013, 13 months from now. I like the peace of mind of knowing if anything goes wrong, I'm covered.
Also, Art, gave the pro8200 for 2 years either 2nd best PJ tied with the epson 8350, or this year honor mentioned, unheard of to give same unit , 2 years , even he said it.
Why? Because it has long warranty, is brighter than most, has tons of inputs and outputs, has 20 watt speakers (10x2) , sharp, good color, portable, case, good for bat cave and non-light controlled room. And It's cheaper than everything else in 1080p. I picked up mine in Dec for 650 NEW. Helps to buy it on sale, right?
There are no known issues with the pro8200. Look into the optoma thread and read if a few people had an issue, white spots, etc. I'm not saying all PJ work all the time, but not a pattern with the pro8200.
Or get PJ that didn't get 2nd best from last year and no honor mention and you are out 800 hundred dollars if something goes wrong a year from now. It's your call. I know what I did, and I am glad I got the pro8200.

Thanks for the input, fellas. I will certainly look through the forums and check out the Viewsonic Pro8200. Great point on the warranty! I have a feeling that I may end up going with the Pro8200 now. The last unit im considering is the Acer h6500. Is the Viewsonic Pro8200 a better option? The Pro8200 may be better for HD TV and gaming anyway. That's probably a complicated questions since there are tradeoffs it seems with every option. Maybe at this point I'm splitting hairs. Regardless, thanks again for the help.

Here is Arts review of the H6500 http://www.projectorreviews.com/acer/h6500/index.php . Pro8200 likely has a better user menu, H6500 appears to have better 1:1 pixel mapping. Not sure which has better shadow detail or blacks. If was to guess the Pro8200 may have better shadow detail and the H6500 may have darker blacks. But I haven't viewed either so take that for a grain of salt.

as an owner of 2 optoma hd20 projectors (one i purchased in feb. 2010 and the other purchased in jan. 2011), they only issue i had with them is one of them got a spec of dust on the color wheel and it caused color flickering. i opened it up and took some canned air around the color wheel and it hasn't done it since. it has 3100 hrs on it. dust is an issue with any kind of projector.

the hd20 has been an awesome projector. when i bro saw mine, he got one. he's had zero problems out of his. i can't speak for these other projectors. but i wanted to give you some feed back on the hd20 from someone who's got quite a bit of experience with them.

I've had my Optoma GT750 for 2 months now and could not be happier. I boughtthis model because it was the only projector with real 3D for under $1000! I am impressed! The video quality is very good, Blu-ray and HD over cable looks amazing - good color, decent contrast, incredibly bright and the 3D look great (I'm using dlp link glasses - about $55 for two pairs on eBay)!

The projector can be found for around $700 - less then most decent non 3D 55" flat screen with the potential for screen sizes of 130" or more (mine is set for 100").

The only drawback is placement issues, with no zoom or lens shift placement is critical but can be achieved with a bit of preplanning!
