Acoustimass 6 Series III & Onkyo Receiver Dilemma

Hi... Newbie here so don't beat me up too bad,
I bought the Acoustimass 6 Series III and Onkyo HT-RC330 package at Sams for $800. (They now have it for $750 on-line but no credit even though it was a month ago today) The good news is that I have a 90 day return window.
I would appreciate suggestions as to new equipment so I can take this back. It's not bad, but I think there is a better avenue out there.
We have a Sharp 70" Aquos LC-70LE734U.
I am in the $1000 to $1500 budget range.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks for your time....

With $800 I'll get an Onkyo HT-S7500 over any Bose system.

Now, with a $1500 budget I'll suggest an AVR in $500 range (Denon, Onkyo, Yamaha, etc) a $400 subwoofer and the rest for speakers!!!

Just my 2 cents!!!

Scott;

You definitely want to return that stuff ASAP!!! Instantly!

It IS BAD....lol. Consider yourself saved from sound worse than death...rofl.

The receiver is way way underpowered and you can get the Denon AVR-1612 for $300, which is a MUCH MUCH better receiver in every respect. Check out the Home Theater magazine review of it online at their website. They rated it a Best Buy and that is definitely true.

For speakers, I recommend a pair of Boston Acoustics Classic CS26 speakers for the fronts ($150 each), a pair of the Boston CS23 for the rear/surround speakers ($70 each), and the Boston CS225C Center Speaker ($140). That will run you about $500 total from Amazon, and be about 400% better-sounding than the junk you are returning.

For a subwoofer, the Klipsch RW12D is available for around $300 or so. It is the cheapest decent subwoofer I know of; beware of underpowered subs that are too small to be useful.

That system will sound very good, as opposed to the absolute crap sound you will get from the stuff you are returning.

I am trying to source the various options. I have an old 5 speaker Cerwin Vega setup which looks similar, but is 20 years old and 4 ohms.
Amazon is about $1250 for all of it. The Bose was attractive because of the size. Do you think 5.1 or 7.1 is the best answer?
Thanks again,
Scott

It depends on the size of your room. You need a pretty large room to get all the advantages out of 7.1. So most guys just do 5.1 and are able to get higher end better sounding speakers for the same money.

I have done some research and brought my old Cerwin Vega HT series speakers back into use.
I bought the DENON AVR-1911 Refurb for $300 and I found the Klipsch RW D-12 Sub new at $360.
Everything should be fine now.

Again, Many Thanks to all for the input!!!!!!

The amp has a single RCA pre amp out to the sub woffer. The sub has a L+R RCA phono in. How do I hook it up? Pre amp out to R in or do I get a Y adapter? I can't find any directions. Thanks in advance!!

It doesn't really matter. You can get a splitter if you like.

I have Bose in my SUV and it's actually not half bad. It is a lot easier to design a good sounding system if the room is exactly the same every time. I always wondered though, if they think their tiny little speakers are so good, then why do they put larger ones in cars? Smaller space bigger speakers. Hmmmmmmm.......
