Chroma Multiburst

Display: Samsung PN51E8000
Source: Samsung BD-E5900-ZA (Bluray Player)
AVR: Denon AVR-1612

Was going through the Spears & Munsil High Definition Benchmark Blu-Ray Edition. Didn't have any problems until I came across the Chroma Multiburst test pattern. The 5th box in the second row (the thinnest section of vertical lines) is blacked out. The HDMI Color Format for the Bluray player is selected on Auto. When I switch it to YCbCr(4:4:4) I get no change, RGB Standard the lines become visible and I do not believe I notice a difference when switching to RGB Enhanced. Does anyone know what and how to fix this problem?

It means either your receiver or your display incorrectly are converting from YCbCr 4:4:4 to RGB at some point. Auto is probably defaulting to YCbCr 4:4:4, which is why it is the same. RGB Enhanced is only for when using a Blu-ray player with video content on a monitor calibrated for PC content, so RGB Standard is giving you all the chroma detail with no issue. The easiest thing to do is stay here, since it's the correct setting. If you want to test some more, try using YCbCr 4:4:4 without the receiver in the middle of the chain, so you can find out if the display or the receiver is causing the issue.

So really, the correct fix is to use RGB Standard, but if you want to know if the issue is the receiver or the TV, remove the receiver from the chain and see if YCbCr is still muted. You can also see if you can disable video processing in the Denon, as at least with Marantz components (which share a lot with Denon), you need to disable Video Convert to get the full chroma resolution with YCbCr content.

What does the black & white multiburst pattern do re. the single-pixel lines (vertical & horizontal)? If the B&W multi-burst is clean/normal looking with the Blu-ray player in Auto mode, the problem you see in the Chroma multiburst is unlikly to cause an issue you will be able to see with real video content.

Video processing in AVRs is dodgy and that could definitely be an issue as pointed out in another post. I've seen "Through" modes that shouldn't do anything to the video still having an effect on the video. Frankly, we are past the days when we need video processing in AVRs as most Blu-ray players and some TVs do a passable job of upconverting DVD and people are watching fewer and fewer DVDs and Standard Def TV anyway, so it wouldn't break my heart to see video processing in AVRs disappear... all we really need is on--screen displays for the selected source, volume, muts, surround mode, setup menu, etc.

Have you ever found the HDMI pass-through on a Sony Receiver alter the (video) input signal? I have three different AV receivers from Sony and none of them seem to have any effect on the HDMI video signal being passed through.
