NEW SONY STRDN1030 RECEIVER - Page 3

Please Joshmalee go to the USER'S MANUAL pages 81-83; there you may find all related to the bluetooth function in this receiver.

Brace yourselves folks, I'm about to ask a totally subjective question so I apologize upfront. I just need a sounding board. So I just bought an open box denon 2113 from crutchfield and I'm feeling like I spent more than I needed when other less expensive options are out there. Particularly today, I'm thinking the dn1030. So here it is, do you folks think I made a mistake? My setup is a panasonic 65vt50 and a 5.1 mirage nano sat v2 with floor standing fronts and a 12 in sub. I like to future proof as best I can afford, hence the 7.1, but I don't foresee an upgrade anytime in the near future. Thanks for your help and opinions.

I have had my sony 1030 for about a month. I just upgraded speakers and wanted to try the uncompressed audio 5.1 from pirates of the Caribbean (dead man's chest) and it doesn't show any of the uncompressed formats on my receiver display (master -hd or anything) after I switch it on the blu-ray player. Dolby Digital 5.1 works fine which is great, but I thought I should be able to get the uncompressed audio to work....

I am using HDMI from Samsung bd-p1500 (with latest firmware from 2011). What should it display on the receiver for uncompressed 5.1 from this blu-ray? Could it be my hdmi cable needs to be 1.3 or 1.4? Just not sure what's up.

Thanks!

go to the BR player settings and see if the audio out settings are PCM instead of bitstream.
set the tuner to multichannel linear, it may show 48Khz.
eaamon - thanks. I do have it at bitstream (audiophile). I will check the multichannel linear and see what it says. Thanks again.

I'm sure this has been asked before, would the Energy 5.1 Take Classic Home speakers go well with this system?
I'm thinking about getting a new surround system for the new PS4 and Xbox coming soon.

It would do just fine. I have it running with energy rc70's and the veritas 5.2 center which are larger. The 1030 can pump out 145w per channel. No sweat for those speakers. Newegg has them for 299 with esaver code right now. That's a great deal.

The issue was that the intro to the movie switched to dobly 2.0 for 15 seconds or so but when the actual movie started it became the uncompressed 5.1. Thanks again. I just needed more patience and to pay attention to the receiver display a little more.

Cool, how do i take advantage of that new egg esaver deal???
Just sign up on their site - I think email is all you need. Good luck!!
Looks like it was only a 24 hour deal.....Maybe you could call and tell them you just signed up and heard about it. It was a 40% off deal. Newegg is a super place for gear. This was an e-blast deal.
Ah well, thanks I'll keep an eye out for sales. Theyre about $380 on Amazon so that's not bad.
monoprice, has what folks say is the same manufacturer and specs but at a much lower price. It just has monoprice instead of energy on the front. Good reviews - and just put on cnet as a compare review I think. About $100 or more less....Monoprice is very good - I have purchased many things from them.

http://reviews.cnet.com/1770-5_7-0.html?query=monoprice&tag=srch&searchtype=products

9774 is the model #.

Good luck!!

One more option is on wwstereo with code MEGADEALNEWS for the energy veritas minis. People on the energy forum really are impressed with these. $349 with the code at checkout for the rosenut color. A step up from the energy classic takes. These retail for 1200. I am considering picking them up it's such a good deal.

I really like this receiver. I was able to reassign the video and audio inputs. Page 88-89 of the manual using the tools/options button (after turning gui on). I had to change the component in's and analog in's for the wii to video 1 (which the default is dvd, I believe). I then use hdmi from the receiver to the TV. It up-converts the video signal from 480p to 1080i. I also renamed the video 1 to wii so that's displayed on the receiver . The more I work with the receiver the better.

Did you find that the renamed input displayed correctly on the front of the box or just in the GUI display?
It displayed it on the front of the box. Very nice, indeed. Especially for the kids (and adult kids) smile.gif

Does anyone else hear a short sound - almost like static for about 1/10 of a second sometimes when changing inputs (or even within a movie - going from dolby 5.1 in previews, to Master-HD for the actual movie)? It's not a big deal but wondering if this is normal and/or if anyone else has experienced it.

I have been using this receiver for several months now and am very pleased with it. However I have found that I cannot get Airplay Mirroring to work with it. I have an appropriate model macbook pro that supports mirroring, but the receiver simply does not show up in my audio control panel's list of available audio outputs. iTunes detects it just fine and allows me to switch to my speakers as the output, and other 3rd party software for video streaming seems to detect it just fine, but for some reason the Airplay mirroring just does not work. This is really frustrating, since i would very much like to listen to Spotify through my speakers, but I don't want to have to bring my computer over to the TV and plug in an HDMI cable just to get audio.

Anyone else run into this and hopefully have a solution? i am really hoping the answer isn't "Sony's firmware doesn't support it and we don't know when or if it will be fixed". One of the reasons I got this receiver was so I WOULDN'T have to get an Apple TV.

Thanks in advance!

Is anyone using the DN1030 with the Sony BDP-S790 and if you are how do they perform together?

Never mind. I tried one yesterday and although a step in the right direction for Sony...I'll have to pass on keeping it.

I am using an samsung bdp (4 years old) and the passthrough hdmi with the str-dn1030 really works great - going to a samsung tv. Bitstream audio is tremendous through this receiver (lossless audio).
Just picked up this receiver up yesterday at Best Buy. Coming from an older 7.1 onkyo , Loved my onkyo but it had no 3d passthrough. Got the the 1030 for 360 bucks. Easiest basic setup of any receiver I've owned. So far I'm fairly impressed, only feature I'm missing(or cant find) is the volume adjust per input. My Xbox is much louder than my DVR. My onkyo let me adjust for the different input, but I can't find anything to let me do that on the Sony.
Congrats! I have had my receiver for over a month and haven't read or seen anything about the volume control. Great price! That's the lowest I have heard of since it came out.
Ok thanks, that's too bad about the volume control. the dynamic volume option is pretty bad. gotta say I love the bluetooth music streaming though. MY TV is supposed to have it but I couldn't make it work with my phone. This works flawlessly.

Pandora and Slacker were nightmare to find the right place to register and as others have mentioned the GUI is the worst, but audio quality is very good.

Yeah - gui isn't great but I am used to it now. Took a little while to figure out. Really good receiver sound wise but definitely has it's quirks.

Hello STRDN1030 experts/owners,

I am facing two problems with this receiver I purchased recently last week.

1) The receiver fails to do 7.1 channel check clip with both Dolby and DTS. When I run the channel check clip, it provides audio only on the front channels on Front Left, Center and Front Right. No audio signals on Surround Left or Right or Rear Left or Right. I have 7.1 speaker setup. I called Sony Support to see if they can help to fix it, but they failed. I am testing the channel check video clip from Blu Ray discs of Dolby and DTS using my Sony Blu Ray player. Also tested with Dolby 7.1 channel check video available on YouTube. It works fine if I do a factory reset on the receiver which was first suggestion Sony support provided. But once I turn it off and turn it back on, it doesn't provide audio on the right channels especially on the Rear and Surround channels. As suggested by Sony support, I had PLIIx MV selected as Sound Field. Also tried some other 7.1 type options there. Also had "Auto", "Multi ST" and some other options tried from "A.F.D". But no luck with passing the channel check videos. I also have 3/4.1 as speaker pattern listed in the setup. I believe it is the default.

2) I also see the audio is totally missing in some cases especially with Video 1 and Video 2 HDMI inputs. This issue also gets fixed if I do a factory reset and goes back to same state once I turn it off and turn it back on.

I am totally puzzled about these two problems and about to return this receiver. And the most interesting thing is that this is the second receiver of this model I am testing. Both have exact same issues. I bought this receiver by seeing the Outstanding review by CNET.

I am trying to replace my Denon AVR-1910 7.1 receiver which doesn't have 3D support. In the past I had Onkyo TX-SR606 which is also a 7.1 receiver. And the first receiver I used was a Sony 5.1 receiver which was probably the best receiver I used. But I had to move on to the newer receivers as new technologies got introduced. The reason I mentioned this is that to let you know that I am not a complete newbie to home theater system or receivers and all the other receivers worked fine with the same 7.1 and 5.1 channel check videos I have been using.

Also wonder if any of you tried to run this 7.1 channel check on your receiver? I must be missing something in the setup. I can't think of any reason to no have the right audio signals on the right channels during the test. When I watch a movie, I do hear from all speakers though. But I am not sure if it is supposed to be the right audio coming out via those channels and that was the reason I wanted to make sure it passes the 7.1 channel check.

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions you can provide.

Sorry to hear about your troubles with the receiver.

I did notice you mentioned that you have 2/4.1 as the speaker pattern. That is 6.1 not 7.1. It should be 3.4.1. if you have 3 fronts (L/C/R), 4 surrounds and 1 sub. That could explain why you are not getting the second surrounds working or something else not producing sound. Make sure you set the speaker pattern first then run the autocalc with the mic. Hope that helps some. Also - you will want to change any large speakers that Sony autocalc put in there to small for all with a crossover of 80hz for fronts, c, and around 100hz for the surrounds (depending on the speakers you have) so that all the low end goes to the sub. I run autocalc for distance and eq only then switch the speaker size. Then use test tones in the sony gui - that would let you know for sure if everything is working correctly.

I would also (as a sanity check) check the speaker wires to make sure you didn't inadvertently switch red/white (+ and -) and that you plugged them into the correct plugs in the back. I recommend banana plugs if you don't have them. Saves tons of time and frustration.

One other thing - if your BD player can handle it change it to bitstream, so that you run lossless audio - for tru-hd, master-hd. That is such an incredibly clean sound.

Sorry, I meant 3/4.1 speaker pattern - not 2/14.1. That was a typo. I will edit the original post. 3/4.1 seems to be the default speaker pattern.

I tried multiple option on Blu Ray player for audio. As it was a Sony BD player Sony support provided correct settings as well. But it is not just BD player, I am trying to test this. I also tried some online channel check videos like these

For 7.1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TdLTe_yckY
For 5.1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7O8HdBQbiTc

So, it may not be the BD Player.

Running the "Test Tone" from the GUI was going through correct channels. Also the AutoCal was giving proper sounds from all channels. It is mainly, the channel check audio/video clips I am having trouble with. Also missing audio in some inputs time to time.

Thanks a lot for your inputs.
