So Onevoice2 said, I bought a new house and I want a theater can you help? It happens to be just 10 minutes away and there is a Home Depot on the way there.

The bad news is that the room was already finished, The good news is that Onevoice2 had the desire to do it right. Clips, channel, DD and GG. All penetrations treated and beefy door, Flex duct connections for supplies and a dead vent powered return.

Can we actually get drywall down this stairway? We did a test sheet today and the answer is Just Barely

DEMO can be very therapeutic. Carrying it outside in contractor clean up bags and taking 2000 lbs to the dump, not so much.

What happens when a builder runs out of insulation? bottom right. Just cover it over.

When I looked at that soffit my initial reaction was I can't believe they need something that big. I drilled a couple of holes and stuck in a scope and there looked like a lot of air.

When we got the side off the answer was pretty obvious. The soffit was much larger than it needed to be.

Back wall goes up to define the space.

room will be 12'8" by 23' That bump out at the back will be a dead vent, a rack space and some disk storage rack

The plan is for two rows of 3 seats, a back bar won out over screen wall so the speakers will be in plain sight. Due to the head room. the desired screen size and the size of the desired sub-woofer A stage might not be possible.

It's nice to see that you're starting over to do everything right. I'd think that ripping apart a finished room would be hard for many people, but it is definitely the right decision to get the best theater possible!

I'm excited to see how this one turns out.

Looks like it will be a great project!

Just curious if removing the banister would help with the drywall delivery? It's GOT to be faster than trying to manipulate the drywall around it.

And by the way, if you happen to come across a replacement for the bottom piece of that banister (it looks just like mine except for the parts where the dog chewed it) let me know where I can pick it up.

I like BIG threads, and this looks a little bit like my room. Stairs down, except mine "bumps out" where this one "bumps in." Will be excited to see how this goes cool.gif

What are you using to cut the backer board? I ended up tearing mine up when I tried to cut it. I bought the scoring tool which helps but I had to score the line, like, 50 times. I have one of the Diablo blades for cutting cement board, and that works like a hot knife through butter on the cement board but didn't work so well on the backer board.

Tom - I just use a circular saw blade (rough/cheap construction type) to cut the backer. The backer if fiberous, so you need teeth to 'tear' it. Its dusty as hell though. The score technique works but takes to long (IMO) but it is a great indoor option. I have one of those small battery powered circular saws and it works really well for this purpose (not much else though).

BIG - The thread started less than two days ago and you are already rebuilding .. please tell me you have been sand bagging the pics and it really didn't happen that fast?? Look forward to seeing where this goes.

Also - I have an identical soffit along the rear of my theater that I "over-built" in 2003. Surprisingly, it looks a lot like that one w/r/t what is inside. Can't wait to see what you do with it, maybe it will give me some ideas on what I can do with mine before the GOM panels go up.

Is that the 3-4 four tooth Diablo blade? If so that's the one I have and it works great on cement board but I didn't have any luck with it cutting the fiber backer board.

It's getting there. A LOT of people do the easy-mode theaters. Just put a projector up in a room to watch football. (All of which are cheap projectors in a room full of light, which makes it look like watercolors... but hey, it's big!) But so many people have been at my house, seen the theater, and asked me so many questions about it, one of which is always.. "what did that cost you?/what would it cost me to do this?" which is usually followed by them touching the fabric walls, and wondering what they are made of, asking if my projector can do "high def" or not, which is funny by itself.

OK full disclosure.

I started the project June 28th. Thirty days ago.

Phase one - demolition and clean-up, line stairway with plastic, put down plastic carpet protection and tarps. Remove carpet and pad, tear off drywall in pieces small enough to fit in garbage bags, remove soffit framing. Cart all that crap up the stairs and to the dump. actual time spent = 30 hours.

Phase two - Preparation for drywall - build new wall, rework existing electrical boxes, add insulation, , install clips and channel on walls and ceiling, install blinds and cover two windows, build and install backer boxes, Install new electrical circuits for lighting, equipment and outlets. Run wire to new sub-panel box installed in basement. Patch drywall holes electricians made in garage walls to run cable to sub-panel. Install conduit for projector, fashion plywood for first layer in projector location. Re-route TV cable connections. Plus Misc. Actual time spent = 60 hours.

I'm not turning on the master, he probably has forgotten more than I will ever know about theater design and acoustics, just pointing out that there is a significant difference in our chosen paths in life and roles in theater building.

Challenge of the week is getting drywall to the basement. The company I was going to use to do inside delivery is now saying they are really busy. Translation = we don't want to do it and if we stall maybe you will go away. Frankly this will be one of the most difficult deliveries I've seen so I can't blame them. So I will be heading over to plan B Monday morning. My last resort will be to get normal garage delivery then round up two strong looking dudes at 7-11 to wrestle 63 sheets down the stairs.
