This week was all about the soffits

remember we started with this lame over built bulkhead

IMG_8173.jpg

Replaced it with a double MDF and green glue two step alternative.

Luckily only one side needed the soundproofing treatment the other 3 sides were built inside the drywall bunker.

basically a 2x2 and 3/4 inch MDF design.

did a mock up of some molding and to see if you can do a light tray on a 4 and 5 inch tall soffit, the result was positive and Onevoice2 said Do It.

Next the stage and riser.

Wow! I forgot how much I loved these forums... Especially the big mouth threads.

Which reminds me, I should see how your shed finished and what happened to the sauna, since last I saw the drain had dried in the cement.

Yes, we are although life has been a bit hectic so we have not been down as regularly as in the past. Jumped back onto the forum as I had a mini scare with my basement having some small puddles of water, which resulted from a small leak in my main line. All fixed and patched up. I'll have to catch up on all your other projects - easy to do with your signature. Glad to see you are still plugging away full steam and enjoying your passion.

OK, Pictures tonight I promise. Stage, Riser, Dead Vent, built, Working on Mudding and Taping today. Did I mention carrying the sand to the basement? Also had all the riser decking ripped in half at HD so I could negotiate the stairs easily.

Those molding mock-up photos explain SO much about how to approach finishing soffits. Completed images always look so beautiful but make such a project seem well out of reach of the novice. Now maybe not so much. smile.gif

I have the same soffit almost exactly in my build and, as it so happens, am putting the same crown moulding on!  I'm staining it currently, but hadn't put up a mock up yet. Now, I don't have to!  For me, I'm not going to do the crown on the inside corners, but am putting the outer ones like you.  I had considered one more trim piece under the crown to get that seem a little cleaner, but I think it'll be ok how you have mocked up here.

I hadn't seen this thread yet.  It's so funny how close our soffits are!  (I'm going to have to go back and see how you built these and where I went wrong rolleyes.gif )

OK as promised some pictures of riser and stage building. Also the beginning of what we are going to do with that bump out.

Riser is a perimeter of 2x12s and mid spans of 2x10s

Stage is a modest 2x4 straight design

Decking for stage and riser and the remainder of the insulation and sand ready to make the journey down the stairs.

Looks great!

Just curious, do you use nails or deck screws for your riser construction?

Framing nailer on the frame, Deck screws for the decking.

Why the 2x10 in center?

Hey BIG, do you have any pics of how you built that soffit around the duct work for sound proofing?

Thanks!

2x12s would have been a waste of money. Or did you think I should go smaller? Also if we decide to cut some holes in the top and make it a broad band bass trap we can.

It was a mind boggling exercise, I have a sketch I'll share later. The soffit is hung off the wall, ceiling and some IB3 clips running down the middle.

Looking very good - great progress. Makes me realize how slow I am moving!

What kind of electrical boxes did you use in the riser? Old Work or New Work?

Progress is looking spectacular Big.

Wish I could have been more involved over the past few weeks. Been spending time dealing with my own box builds for my subs and the wifey has not been too thrilled with my time investment..

Not sure if you still could use a hand, but man I'm still eager to learn as much as I can Big. I'll smooth things over with the wife and see if I can come through to help next week (if your interested).

Are their different types of insulation in the riser?

Yes, you'll have to figure out if it was an intentional acoustic decision or if I was just having lunch near Home Depot the day I needed another roll and the other stuff was from Lowes.

Had to use two methods, In one section of the soffit there is a bundle of HVAC condenser lines and I had to cantilever that section a bit. Overall construction was a layer of 3/4 and a layer of 1/2 inch MDF with GG. The soffit is attached to the isolated drywall and to IB3 isolation clips running down the middle.
