Increasing sharpness and contrast on your projector

When will these be in stock?

I stumbled across that in the $20k+ form maybe a month ago and picked one up, it's pretty sweet. If you keep the settings reasonable it's a very nice improvement with really no downsides.

What's funny is I've seen presumably similar sharpening algorithms implemented in certain filters in digital imaging programs for static images, and I always wondered if such a thing could be applied to video more aggressively beyond our standard edge enhancing algorithms that most video devices ship with, but in a way that did not ruin the image. This thing sure has great reviews, so I guess this answers my question (it was possible, but who knew)... Whoever made this certainly must have been very intelligent, because there are hundreds of sharpness filter attempts and this one seems to stand out...

I will have to grab one eventually, for now though kind of swimming in the swamp of HT redo's.

Thanks for pointing that out. I just picked up an Epson 6010 and I'd like to get a bit of extra sharpness out of it. Does anyone know nifty this device would add any input lag? I thought I read that some of the super resolution modes on the Epson add lag, so am just curious if a device like this would.

Any idea if the Darbee has trouble driving HDMI cables that are 30ft or longer?

I had to replace my 50' 22AWG monoprice HDMI cable (which didn't need to be that long anymore) with a 25' BJC Series 1. The Video passed fine, but the handshaking was worsened.

Some of us for a while had the secret weapon for a sharper image than the other guy. Now the beans are spilled and everyone one will have one.

Also curious about what kind of lag gets introduced with this device?

I've never experienced any lag ever but handshaking issues on the other hand crop up and annoy me from time to time!

No, it has no effect on that.

When you turn the Darblet on, the result looks like the image suddenly pops into tighter focus. It will not change your calibration settings or otherwise alter the content of the picture. If there were artifacts in the video, there will still be artifacts.

Thanks Mike and calv1n. That is good to hear. I have cut myself off from any purchases until we see what hits at Cedia, but if I end up keeping my 45 I will probably try one of these out.

Would you recommend this if all one does is watch 1080p blurays and play games at 1080p? From what I was reading it really only shines on lower resolution material, and the only time 720p graces my screen is the occasional TV show (normally I just watch TV shows on a TV).

I use it only for 1080P native material. I would not run my theater without one.

Are you a PC gamer or outptting your consoles to 1080P?

Any word on how low ire scenes look with this product? I always thought that if something like a dlp could digitally manipulate the image, low light scenes could look much better.

Both he and Gary are now leaving the Darblet in their systems when they revue Bluray releases, if you can imagine that.

And Jeff Meier (UMR) posted this on his blog while on the road working in L.A. the same day he first saw it. In fact he has said elsewhere a couple of times he is more excited about it than any other "processor" he has ever worked with...... (paraphrasing)

One question, does the "demo" mode on the Darblet do a comparison of using the Darblet vs not so you can see the difference between the two? Does the unit increase/decrese in 5% increments?

The On/Off button upper left on the remote turns on and off whatever setting you have instantly. Not a power button. The Demo mode has both a half and half split screen to see difference and the 2nd demo choice is a sweeping line across the full frame back and forth to turn the processing on and off as it moves.

The unit used to increase or decrease in the 5s but it's reported the new software has it in 1s now. Don't know if 5s are still an option. But you can hold the more or less buttons down and it continues at a decent pace.

for the low cost, the Darby is a good addition to any projector. it's great when combined with the e-shift on the RS55.

The easiest way to 'demo' the changes is to simply turn it on / off rapidly... the screen doesn't resync, so it's easy to see the changes between 0 and whatever setting you choose. I stay around 35-40% HD mode for most BD content.

I think I finally have some good screenshots showing Darbee on / off + combined with the e-shift. I'll get the images together and post them soon to give a close up look at what it's doing to the PQ.
