Going through Open File > Browse and it will show VIDEO_TS, AUDIO_TS, and .mpg. And it will play the .mpg. However selecting VIDEO_TS will not play it but does open it up in order to select its individual files.
You seem to be struggling with the difference between a DIRECTORY(folder) and FILE.
If you ask MPC-HC to 'Open Directory' it is expecting you to choose a directory to open and likewise if you choose the alternative, MPC-HC>File>Open File.
I assume you are trying to open DVD backups. Another thing to try is MPC-HC>File>Open DVD. Then choose the movie folder which contains the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders. Do NOT select the VIDEO_TS folder. By doing this, your movie should appear as it does on a regular stand-alone player with full menu support. However, you may run into issues here with DVD navigation or macrovision errors. There are workarounds for this.
Like others have said, MB is an excellent program for instructing your PC to play different formats with different players of choice. For example, I tell MB to play my movies in WMC when it recognises the format as DVD (folder and iso structure). And, tell it to use MPC-HC for mkv's etc.
By no means do you require Assassin's guide to get this functionality, however, if you value your time like I do, it's a pretty solid investment. There are a lot of topics covered, but only read those applicable to you.
