Ascend Sierra-1 vs Ascend Sierra-1 NrT ??? Is it worth Extra $450 ???

Hi guys. ...

So, just placed my order for Ascend Sierra-1 L/R/C cost $1,350 .... but I read a little online about their NrT upgrade and it's $150 per speaker. From 2 reviews I hear good things about it.

Is it worth it to upgrade as my order has yet to be built???

thanks

The Nrt upgrade is super awesome and will provide a even better definition. I would order them with the better tweets, imo. The definition and better crossover is so worth the small amount to get such a even better resolution. If you do upgrade, tell Mr. Dave that some Brian guy encouraged you biggrin.gif

what kind of sound do you prefer? You can name a few speakers you liked in the past and their attributes..
For some, NRT made a huge improvement, for some others, it was a little bright. It also depends on the room you plan to keep them in. (hardwood vs carpeted floor, glass windows etc). If I were in your position, I would order SIerra-1 without NRT and then wait for the next uber upgrade that Dave has alluded to on his forum.. Hope it helps..

Brian, I don't think the crossover is any better, the crossover point is just changed (I believe it is lower).

I have hard wood floors but i do have a large carpet like cover that takes up 70% of the living room floor. Walls are somewhat empty. I do have 2 big windows. So yea, sound will bounce,

All I want is crisp, clarity ... etc. I want that acoustic guitar to feel as if it's in the room, same goes for violin, voice, etc.

I am upgrading from a $600 Onkyo HTiB that I had for 12 years. :-) I have the money to spend, IF I get the sound that's worth it. Should I call them up and upgrade??

If you have room on the credit card, order the NrT too. Then compare them at home and keep the pair you like better.

Guitar and violin sound excellent on both. Dave knows how a guitar sounds. smile.gif

Yea that's what I usually do with many things I buy, but I don't feel like loosing $120 on shipping when this upgrade is just $450. You know what I mean? I hear good things about it though. Would be nice to hear an opinion of someone who listened to both of these

My favorites at the show were the TAD stuff. Their new lower cost speaker ($30K) was excellent, as well as the Ref 1.

In the Wyred4Sound room was the Clearwave speaker, that I thought was nice for $7K price tag relative to the others speakers I heard. Midrange sounded a bit harsh to me...but still excellent.

Having never heard any Ascends prior to buying my Sierra 1...I decided on the NrT from the get go...they didn't dissapoint. I've since moved up to the Towers and I opted to stick with the standard NrT because IMO it's that good.

This review is what sold me and likely a few others...smile.gif http://forum.ascendacoustics.com/showthread.php?t=4694

Is the shielding worth it too? I'll most likely have it close to my LED tv...

I don't know if this has been asked before but would the sierra bookshelf be available in the future with the RAAL ribbon tweeter ?

Dave has alluded to some exciting new changes for the Sierra 1 over at Ascend. The potential use of the RAAL was discussed for the Sierra 1...I'd start ~ post 35 or read the whole thread.

Shielding was originally implemented for close proximity to the old CRT TV's which were easily affected by the stray magnetic gauss field of the drivers' magnets. Modern LCD/LED/Plasma sets do not suffer from this and thus do not require the shielding.

Ah ok ya I figured that was the reason. Thank you for clearing that up. Much appreciated.
