Mitsubishi 65" DLP Light Engine Failure 6 months out of warranty...will Mitsubishi pay for repair?

I bought 65" Mitsubishi DLP in October of 2010. I loved every minute of watching it.

All of a sudden, 1 day I get these vertical black and white lines that look like a barcode. I call up Mitsubishi, and the guy basically says, "sorry, we don't know what that could be. you're out of warranty here's some shops we recommend".

I figured I'd have to pay for the fix myself.

So, I take it to the shop a few weeks ago (the tv had been sitting unused for a couple of months), and the repair guy says he'd never seen it before, and called Mitsubishi and they advised him that it needed a new light engine.

He told me to call Mitsubishi back and ask if they will pay for some of the repair since it's only a few months out of warranty. That basically they will extend the initial warranty period to cover the cost of the repair, which is over $900.

I called Mitsubishi and they told me to get my proof of purchase and repair estimate and they will review it.

Has anyone ever dealt with this sort of thing? How likely are they to pay to fix/replace the TV?

Mitsubishi replaced my TV over one year out of warranty with a newer and higher tier model. I have read here in the forums where they have paid some or all of the cost of other people's repairs several years out of warranty. Be firm but also polite, and insist on satisfaction since a TV shouldn't fail so quickly, no matter the warranty. Mitsubishi really stands behind their product and will try to help you out.

They alreasdy said they'd review it. That's more than you'd get out of Samsung or Sony, in my opinion.

Keep the negotiations going, you might be surprised.

Mitsubishi called yesterday and offered to pay for the new light engine if I paid for the labor. I thought about holding out to see if they would also pay for the labor, but the labor isn't much, and I went ahead and took what they offered. When I initially took it to the repair shop, I was already willing to pay more out of pocket than what the labor is going to cost me now. So, I get a new light engine for not much money, for a tv that was out of warranty. Not a bad deal.

They only give a 90 day warranty on the new light engine, though. Which I'm not too thrilled about. But, they did say that if I had another problem with the light engine, even out of warranty to call them back and they would be able to help me out again.
