Really?

I really did not anticipate so much trouble picking up a new projector, especially since my budget this go around is upwards of $3k versus all the budget projectors I have purchased in the past. With this extra budget I knew placement would be much easier especially since my new home has no more than 15’ of throw form lens to screen. My use for a projector is 50% movies and 50% games. Of this, I intend to watch 3D whenever I can which I guess will increase more and more as 3D gaming a video content is slowly becoming more available (albeit much slower than I expected). My current projector is an Optoma HD20 projecting onto a 1.0 gain white 135” screen which I have really enjoyed over the past couple years. My only issues with this projector are the blacks and placement challenges with the almost useless zoom and no vertical or horizontal shifts and recently issues with HDCP.

My needs in a new projector are:
- Project a 135” image from 15’
- Easier placement flexibility
- Better blacks please!!!
- Bright and punchy
- Little to NO crosstalk in 3D (I really find crosstalk distracting)
- Low input lag as I do play a lot of games

With my larger budget this go round I was certain the Panasonic AE7000 or Epson 5010 would fit the bill nicely. I discovered after much research that the 5010 has horrible input lag which ruled it out of the running almost instantly. The AE7000 is better for gaming but not the best. That said, I understand the AE7000 still has crosstalk despite all the fancy technology it has seems to have to prevent. I do not get that. Like I said above I really find cross talk distracting which has be really hesitating on the AE7000. So much so that I am now considering BenQ W7000 as it has zero cross talk as I understand it, is bright and while the blacks are not as good at the AE7000, they are better than what I have been viewing. My only issue is 15’ of throw may not be enough for my 135” screen which is crazy as it has a better zoom than my HD20. Come on BenQ!!! So, by process of illumination I feel like my only real option is the Optoma HD33 as I know it works in the exact same place as my HD20 and from the reviews has near zero crosstalk and a great picture albeit sans deep blacks.

Am I missing something here?

3d is a new tech. You may need to up your budget if you want great 3d and great overall picture quality. Or you can wait till the next generation of projectors for Panny/Epson which should have much better 3d

I am in the same boat as you. I want the image quality of the 5010 but with low lag for gaming. I've thrown my hands up for now and am waiting for the August/September announcements for the 2013 models to see if anything improves.

I just picked up a 6010 and I was very worried about all the talk of input lag. It almost kept me from buying the projector. As soon as it got installed I fired up MW3 and had to wait about 45 min for all the updates and packs to download. It's been months. I hoped in my first game on a new map I didn't know and got first easily. I played a few more games and I didn't notice any impact on my ability to play.

I'm not the best player, nor the worst, but not playing for a few months then jumping in and doing well made me realize the projector isn't hindering my play. Maybe if I was ultra competitive and needed every advantage possible, but for me, the Epson works.

Also tried god of war and a few other games and it felt instant when I pressed the button.

My results are not scientific but they are real world, I'm kicking myself for waiting so long to buy it.

I would also suggest waiting to see what CEDIA offers up but have you considered the Sharp Z30000? From what I can tell from ProjectorCentral's Calculator it looks like it has the right throw ratio. There is a review here:
http://www.hometheater.com/content/sharp-xv-z30000-3d-dlp-video-projector

I'm not sure if it is as bright as the BenQ, I can't interpret the lab specs well enough in the review. The 3D is apparently very good and lag shouldn't be an issue. Its listed at $5000 but I have sen it listed for under $4k. To put some of the comments on color accuracy into context, I have the older Z15000 as my backup projector which measured at 7000-7500K in the High Brightness Iris mode. That may seem inaccurate but you couldn't tell when watching, if there was imbalance it was at least consistent across all colors! The brightness was far higher in the High brightness Iris mode as well, enough for me to comfortably watch a 100" with some ambient light. In fact when I tried the closed iris settings I could never get the color to look natural.
The only reason it became my backup was becuase I found a good deal on an IN83

May want to research the Sony HW30 and the Mitsubishi HC9000. I have a Acer H9500BD and am very pleased with it for the money, similar to the W7000 maybe better blacks but the W7000 has a better CMS and user menu. But the H9500 has the ability to play with the iris settings if one is into that.

In 2d the W7000 and H9500 are similar in game lag at 30ms tested against a laptop. Think the 3010/5010/6010 of Epson are around 100ms. The Acer H9500 in 3D the input lag increases can not recall what I calculated it to but is around 100ms but who games competitive in 3D?

Some hard core gamers are doing a 2 projector set up. Optoma GT750 for gaming and a second projector of choice maybe the 5010 as you first thought? 5010 scores well for 3D not perfect but very good and the contrast is said to be very good. Game lag on the GT750 is 0 tested against laptops and believe against CRT's as well.

Other thing to note is 3D gaming you want higher FPS per eye. Console games are going frame packed and 720P 60fps. The native 720P GT750 is said by gamers to render better 3D then the 1080P projectors due to them upscaling. PC's can send a 1080P 60fps but no projectors I know of can render it. Maybe something coming soon?
