I really did not anticipate so much trouble picking up a new projector, especially since my budget this go around is upwards of $3k versus all the budget projectors I have purchased in the past. With this extra budget I knew placement would be much easier especially since my new home has no more than 15’ of throw form lens to screen. My use for a projector is 50% movies and 50% games. Of this, I intend to watch 3D whenever I can which I guess will increase more and more as 3D gaming a video content is slowly becoming more available (albeit much slower than I expected). My current projector is an Optoma HD20 projecting onto a 1.0 gain white 135” screen which I have really enjoyed over the past couple years. My only issues with this projector are the blacks and placement challenges with the almost useless zoom and no vertical or horizontal shifts and recently issues with HDCP.
My needs in a new projector are:
- Project a 135” image from 15’
- Easier placement flexibility
- Better blacks please!!!
- Bright and punchy
- Little to NO crosstalk in 3D (I really find crosstalk distracting)
- Low input lag as I do play a lot of games
With my larger budget this go round I was certain the Panasonic AE7000 or Epson 5010 would fit the bill nicely. I discovered after much research that the 5010 has horrible input lag which ruled it out of the running almost instantly. The AE7000 is better for gaming but not the best. That said, I understand the AE7000 still has crosstalk despite all the fancy technology it has seems to have to prevent. I do not get that. Like I said above I really find cross talk distracting which has be really hesitating on the AE7000. So much so that I am now considering BenQ W7000 as it has zero cross talk as I understand it, is bright and while the blacks are not as good at the AE7000, they are better than what I have been viewing. My only issue is 15’ of throw may not be enough for my 135” screen which is crazy as it has a better zoom than my HD20. Come on BenQ!!! So, by process of illumination I feel like my only real option is the Optoma HD33 as I know it works in the exact same place as my HD20 and from the reviews has near zero crosstalk and a great picture albeit sans deep blacks.
Am I missing something here?
