Either Blu-ray.com captured them wrong or compressed them too much OR Warner did too much "cleanup". This Is Spinal Tap was also 16mm and looks better... Pride & Prejudice... Hurt Locker... Assuming Best in Show hasn't been filtered in some negative way, I suppose I'll still buy it because I love it. Also, it's probably still "better than the DVD". LOL

Pretty much irrevelent, there are plenty of 16mm films that look a hell of a lot better including older ones like Evil Dead and Chasing Amy. If the Wrestler and Black Swan were 'fixed for modern viewers' like Best in Show looks in the caps they would be just as bad.

I have never heard of Aventi before but I find in these caps I find the WB version less pleasing, unless one likes people to look like stretched out to look LOTR dwarfs, strong saturation and less detail. The Aventi version does have some artifacts in the bars in the images but otherwise appears more film-like.

A few may blame the difference on a beaver conspiracy, but like always will be proven wrong.

I'll go with the Aventi...when did the sky start looking like it had teal in it? My PC monitor has pretty accurate colors and sits right next to the window. The Aventi sky is almost the same color as the sky is right now in sunny So Cal at 8:17 in the morning.

The Great Gatsby (1974)

The caps are an improvement over other recent WB classic offerings, a film like look with nice detail and pleasing color grading but there is a hint of EE when a person is wearing light colored clothing. As for the film itself I enjoyed it when I saw it years ago.

Of the four Little Caesar has the weakest detail in the caps but White Heat and Petrified Forest images have great detail while Public Enemy is a bit less impressive, all four seem to have pleasing b&w grading and film-like look. There might be some very slight EE but it's hard to spot.

It's probably in the sources. The film stock of the early 1930s was not nearly as good as that of the late '30s onward.

Balderdash. My BD of M is from the same year as Little Caesar and it's pq is a lot better then those caps, other BDs from 1931 and before that look more promising are:

Phantome Carrrige (21)
Jazz Singer (27)
Wings (27)
Phantom Of the Opera (25)
Dracula (31)
Frankenstein (31)

I believe that Wings, Dracula, Frankenstein (and Bride of...) all went through a restoration process, as part of Universals' anniversary. I doubt that Little Caesar and Public Enemy did.
