Noob questions about wireless with Onkyo setup, and a couple others

I bought an Onkyo S6200 a few years back and had been very happy with it. Recently got married, moved, and the wife doesn't want a rug in front of the tv to put the rear speaker wires under. She, being a wife, is happy with the TVs built in speakers. I, being a musician, am not.

Especially when you touch on the videogame issue and not knowing where sounds are coming from. Not that I need to sell any of you to the horrors of tv speakers.

So here are my options:

1) Is there a way to modify the system so that the rear speakers can be wireless, or (preferably) some add-on I can buy?

2) If not, is there a way to configure the receiver to be 2.1 or 3.1? (A simple "Yes, read the manual" will do)

Cheers and appreciate all responses in advance.

The HT 6200 includes a standard, entry-level Onkyo receiver. It can work with any 8 ohm speakers.

Wireless speaker systems are readily available. I suggest auditioning some, if you can. Of course, they do still need power cords.

Reconfiguring the receiver to be 3.1 is straight forward. Just unplug the surround speakers and run the Audyssey calibration again. It'll redirect the sounds that would have gone to the surround speakers to the fronts.

Edited to add:
If you haven't already done so, you should rerun Audyssey in your new room, anyhow. It'll help a little with the reflections off the hard floor.

You'll have to rerun Audyssey calibration if you replace the surround speakers, too, since they'll sound different from the speakers you have now. Running the Audyssey calibration is described in the manual.

Awesome. Glad it's so easy. Of course I should rerun the calibration! I haven't hooked up the speakers yet, though the receiver is sitting in the media stand. I probably would have forgotten to, thanks for the reminder

I'll look at wireless. Does it matter if they are different than the Onkyo speakers that came with it? Obviously it would matter in the extreme case that the Onkyos have a hi-pass at 1000 Khz and the new ones have a lo-pass at 1000Khz (though that would probably actually improve the sound, in theory), but have people mixed and matched speakers? To get a whole new set of speakers would be annoying.

you can just buy a wireless transmitter/receiver and still use your current speakers. Such as the Rocketfish universal wireless rear speaker kit.

Just remember wireless is not always truly "wireless". You wont have to run wires from receiver to the back of the room, but the you will still need to run wires from the speakers to the wireless receiving device.

Audyssey's room equalization will make the new speakers sound much like your current ones, since it tries to make them all have a more accurate response. The version of Audyssey that's in your receiver isn't quite as capable as its more expensive versions, but it'll help a lot. Of course, if you find speakers that sound similar to the ones you currently have, Audyssey won't have to work as hard.

Audyssey also will set an appropriate crossover frequency for each speaker, so that shouldn't be a problem.

You might want to take a look at the FAQ linked to in the first post in the main Audyssey thread at http://www.avsforum.com/t/795421/official-audyssey-thread-faq-in-post-1

I understand this. As a musician/computer geek, I'm not adverse to fiddling with wires. I'm also fairly educated on EQ due to having a bedroom studio.

I am, however, not someone who knows how to solder or work with circuitboards (though a few weeks ago I had to take a bass cabinet apart to repair it tongue.gif ). I've also never really delved into all the ins and outs of HD audio. So I just need a few points along the way. A transmitting device that works with my current setup is exactly what I'm looking for. I'm aware it would need its own power supply and that wires would have to be used to connect to the transmitter/receiver.

I'll look it up. Keep the responses coming, these are great.

So my local store has the Soundcast SCS100s in stock. This looks like a great option, but I'm seeing random reports about issues with Audyssey. Can anyone comment?
