5.1 Speakers to go with Denon AVR-1713

Hi all. We've moving into a new condo unit and am planning to set up a new 5.1 system. (had a really cheap sony HTIB before)

Decided to get Denon AVR-1713 and am wondering what your recommendations for speakers are. I've looked at Energy, Polks, Paradigm, and there are still so many other brands. We need to decide on the speaker within the next couple days so we can have it ready when the wiring guy arrives later this week to hide all our cables in walls/under floors, which is why I've turned to you guys for help in narrowing down the choices so we can make the decision quickly.

Usage and source:
Gaming and blu-ray movies from PS3, connected through optical (70%)
Cable from digital cable box through HDMI (10%)
Misc. content from the tv (low def stuff), connected through HDMI (10%)
Music via Airplay or USB (10%)

Here's our living room layout: (have a combined living/dining)


We prefer to spend under $1000 for the speakers but the budget can be adjusted up. Also, we have no wall or shelf behind or beside the couch so the rear surround speaker would probably have to be floorstand?

fwiw, pair of hometheater direct level3 bookshelves for front $300
htd level3 center $200
pair of level2 bookshelves for rears $200

energy s10.3 sub $200 newegg

you might want to place the rear speakers on speaker mounted brackets like the pinpoint am40's( $60 a pair... great brackets) on the adjacent walls about 5-6ft. high above the couch pointed at each other just a suggestion

I suggest that you get the Jamo S506 system, which should cost around $700, and the Klipsch RW12D subwoofer, for around $300.

The rear speakers can be mounted on small wall-mounted shelves.

Umm, the S606 system is a heck of alot cheaper, $400 vs $700 for the s506.

A dealer is recommending the PSB HT-2 system for $700. Would that be a good option?

If you want smaller speakers the Image HT2 isn't bad, They only have 4" woofers though. I'd like larger speakers than that up front. Good price though.

I inquired about upgrading some speakers in the HT2 package but the sales guy said the $700 is a special price point for the package; changing anything with be significantly more expensive. For instance, upgrading the front B4s to B5 would increase the price from $700 to $950.

I also got another deal: Klipsch F-10 system for $970.

Which would be the better option? We have enough space in the front for two floorstands. Thanks!

fwiw, looking at your diagram it looks like your sitting about 7' away from tv,imo bookshelf speakers are going to give you more of a soundstage compared to towers which will be in your face. iwould also look into front ported speakers so you can place near the walls without any distortion or boominess. rear ported speakers will have to be put away from the walls puting them even closer to you making for a not so good sound just my 2 cents

If tower speakers aren't ideal for my living room, what about KEF KHT3005 system for $900?

fwiw , again its your money and choice but the htib are not going to give you the sound of some nice bookshelves and a good sub.those speakrs that come in those htib have small drivers so you just don't get the same sound and those subs imo are mostly boom boxes i just think you can do better for $900

For that size of space I'd throw in...

I haven't heard these but being Boston you can expect some good sound. For your space they should fit nicely. I've read several reviews and users are and have been surprised by the sound coming from the small SATs.
